Late Drama Sees Cobh Snatch Win Over Wexford
A controversial header from Dale Holland six minutes from time sealed a dramatic 2-1 win for Cobh Ramblers over Wexford in St.Colman’s Park.
The game started in frantic fashion with both sides looking to attack. The first real chance of the game came through Kian Korbally who made a dangerous run into the box before finding Jordan Adeyemo.
The former Longford player could only blaze his shot over the bar however. Despite this, it would take only 11 minutes to get the game’s first goal when Cobh’s Tiernan O’Brien finished off an impressive move started by Wilson Waweru. The 19 year old academy product pounced on the rebound for his second goal in as many games.
That lead would last just four minutes however when Pierce Phillips headed the ball into his own net after an excellent cross from Conor Levingston.
From here the game began to settle with Wexford edging proceedings in terms chances. It took an excellent Lee Stacey save from Mark Hanratty in the 25th minute to keep the Rams level.
Cobh’s other main chance of the half came through Wilson Waweru whose header hit the cross bar. It wouldn’t have counted anyway as the flag got pulled up for offside. Jack Doherty was also influential in midfield for the Rams.
The second half started in a similar vein to the first with Doherty once again pulling the strings for the hosts. Indeed Wexford had the crossbar and the goal line to thank to stay level on the hour mark.
From here the game once again began to settle into a pattern where Wexford looked to control the game in midfield through Levingston while Cobh looked to use their pace to hit on the break.
Drama was never too far away however and that proved the case in the 84th minute when Dale Holland’s header was deemed to have crossed the line after a goalmouth scramble.
A late Adeyemo effort was cleared off the line in a dramatic ending to a dramatic game as Shane Keegan’s side go joint top with Athlone after two games.
