Waterford bag draw with Pat’s
The RSC proved once more to be a tough venue for 10-man St. Pat’s as they shared the spoils with Waterford in the 18th round of the Premier Division, thanks to a 1-all draw.
Stephen O’Donnell’s troops came out strongly from the dressing room, and were rewarded for their efforts with Matty Smith’s early goal.
However, Alfie Lewis’s red card dismantled the strategy set during the week. Shane Griffin brought the final equaliser in the 35th minute.
The Blues proved once more to be a completely different team under Marc Bircham’s ideas, provoking yet another round with changes at the very top of the table.
The first ten minutes seemed to bring yet another fantastic performance from the Saints, with a sequence of good opportunities to open the score at early doors.
Ultimately Matty Smith managed to do it with just eight minutes gone, sending the ball into the back of the net resulting from a cluster of players inside the six-yard box. This was indeed a special moment for the Scotsman, scoring against his former club.
The visitors came in with the same energy from the last games, however, they suffered a complete turnaround in the 19th minute when Alfie Lewis was sent off by pulling back Shane Griffin being the last men.
A big blow for the Saints levelled up the game, allowing the hosts to surge forward up the pitch looking to take some precious points out of this game.
Smith still had a very good opportunity to give the Dubliners a two-goal advantage, but he saw Brian Murphy stopping it brilliantly.
Ten minutes from the break, the Blues put some justice in the score; Prince Mustwunguma left Lee Desmond behind with great footwork, assisting Shane Griffin to the 1-all.
This was a well-deserved equaliser as they were the best side, following Alfie Lewis’ red card. Eric Molloy still missed a tremendous opportunity inside the first half, heading the ball way over the bar from a privileged position.
Niall O’Keeffe practically opened the second 45 minutes with an awful mistake, offering the ball to Billy King, as Smith saw Murphy showing his class with another brilliant save.
Pats managed to bring a foothold and came close to the 2-1; The substitute Chris Forrester smashed the post with a header just 15 seconds after his introduction.
The reply came right after and yet with another header coming off the woodwork; John Martin was the unlucky man.
St. Pat’s struggled to grab a point out of the visit to Waterford, but ultimately the final whistle confirmed the first draw of the season for the hosts and a tastier result for the Dublin-based side.
