Burns delivers early for Pat’s
St. Pat’s remain close to the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division after a Darragh Burns early goal proved to be enough for a victory over Waterford at Richmond Park.
The hosts took the lead in the opening minute as Burns shot got deflected by the defensive line, deceiving Blues goalkeeper Paul Martin.
Kevin Moran’s Waterford side tried to come forward in the second half looking for the equaliser but never with enough consistency to bother Jaros.
Despite the six changes on Stephen O’Donnell’s team from the starting 11 which faced Dundalk, Saints started matters with an impressive opening quarter looking to guarantee all three points as soon as possible.
Waterford first efforts upfront came close to the half-hour mark, as long-range shots from both Darragh Power and Adam O’Reilly couldn’t meet Jaros’s goal.
The game got scrappy close to the break, with both sides struggling to dismantle the opponent’s web.
On the restart, Pat’s brought the same early pace, and sought the push this tie further beyond their opponents, when Burns good individual play on the right-wing forced Jamie Mascoll to send it away for a corner.
The Southeast gang became bolder after the Saints showed an incapacity to double the score, finding it tough against very organised defensive system.
The lack of attaching ideas on both teams turned the ground into a battlefield with several tackles and with the goals going out of sight. Not just on the pitch, as Mike Newell was sent off after contesting a referee’s decision.
Substitute Matty Smith came brightly into the game, shaking the foundations, and taking advantage of several counter-attacks, but without finding a strong finish to seal the win.
At the death, Chris Forrester’s effort from a freekick came over the bar from what would be the last move before the final whistle.
Pat’s remain shoulder-to-shoulder with Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers at the top - all three have 14 points after six rounds. Wexford are close to the bottom with three points and hoping for better days in the Premier Division.

Chris Forrester puts the resulting freekick over the bar and the referee blows the final whistle.
The sixth blue to find their name into the referee's notebook, Olawutunise Sobowale gives a free kick away on the edge of his own box for the last opportunity of the game for Pats.
James Waite picks up a booking for the visitors.
Stephen O'Donnell will be disappointed as the ball is fired across the goal but Mattie Smith can't find the finish. The Scot could have finished the game as a contest there.
Mike Newell finds himself in trouble again, after already serving a suspension he's been sent off again and won't be in the dugout for the rest of this game.
Jack Stafford is on the pitch, he replaces O'Keeffe for Waterford.
Ronan Coughlan's header finds the Waterford net but it's been ruled out for a push at the corner.
Prince Mustwunguma has had a few vigorous challenges so far since his introduction. He finally sees yellow.
Matty Smith replaced Ben McCormack for St. Patrick's Athletic
Shane Griffin is replaced by Prince Mustwunguma for Waterford
Shane Griffin hits a free kick straight down the throat of Jaros in the Pat's goal. (Yes there was a Shane Griffin on each team tonight!)
John Mountney replaces Shane Griffin for St. Patrick's Athletic.
Darragh Burns works well down the right hand side and forces the corner for St. Pat's from a block by Mascoll.
HALF TIME: St. Pat's take the advantage into the break but will be disappointed not to have a bigger lead considering their performance in the early stages.
It's all gotten a bit scrappy in Richmond Park as both sides are struggling to string more than a pass or two together. Both Stephen O'Donnell and Kevin Sheedy will be happy to get their sides into the changing room at the break.
Ben McCormack gets on the end of a great team move from St. Pat's but find his shot from the edge of the box go wide of the Waterford goal.
John Martin becomes the first player in the book this evening after an over zealous challenge in the middle of the park.
Another long range effort from Waterford with Adam O'Reilly forcing Jaros to make a routine save from all of 30 yards.
Waterford finally get a sight of goal as they start to grow into the game. Darragh Power surges forward but can't get his long range effort on target. It's definitely been brighter from Waterford in the last few minutes.
A great cross from Ian Bermingham finds the feet of Coughlan six yards out from goal but Cameron Evans makes the intervention and it's a throw-in for the saints.
It's been an impressive opening quarter hour from St. Pat's who are controlling the game against an inexperienced Waterford side. Long way to go here though.
Shane Griffin's cross is blocked by Martin under pressure from Coughlan and Griffin unable to draft the rebound home as his effort goes high and over the bar.
And we're off to a blistering start. Darragh Burns has hit a fantastic effort from outside the box that found it's way past Paul Martin on his second start for the club.
