Shels Stage Stunning Comeback To Claim Fourth
A dominant second-half performance sees Shelbourne overcome the challenge of the ten men of Drogheda United in a 4-2 win at Weaver’s Park this evening, securing fourth place in the Premier Division table.
A brace from Jack Moylan on his final game for the Reds and goals from Will Jarvis and Paddy Barrett were crucial as Damien Duff’s side fought back from two goals down with the home side leading through first-half goals from Dayle Rooney and Adam Foley.
The game had few highlights in the opening period of the first half, although Hull loanees Harry Wood and Will Jarvis linked up on multiple occasions to create half chances for their side.
The most clear-cut chance of the game also came from the work of Wood and Jarvis, with Wood turning and playing a beautiful defence-splitting through ball into the path of the onrushing Jarvis. The young winger looked certain to score but a combination of a lacklustre effort and Andrew Wogan standing strong meant the scores remained level.
After growing into the game thanks to some tidy passages of play from Darragh Markey and Dayle Rooney that ultimately led to nothing, the Boynesiders broke the deadlock.
Rooney collected the ball just outside the Shelbourne box and clipped the ball into the penalty area with his weaker right foot. Adam Foley looked to head the ball but failed to make contact and Kyle Robinson did the same, but the chaos in the box meant that Rooney’s initial cross was able to bounce past Kearns and gave the home side the lead.
Minutes after the restart, Drogheda were two to the good thanks to Adam Foley.
Rooney delivered from a free-kick similar to where he scored the opener and delivered this time with his left. Although the ball was headed away initially, the clearance was poor and fell to Foley who smashed a first-time volley past the helpless Kearns to double his side’s advantage.
The second half started off with a flurry of incidents before the hour-mark which saw Shelbourne draw level and Drogheda reduced to 10 men.
Minutes into the second half the Reds got the ball out to the left wing where Jarvis clipped it to last week’s hero, Jack Moylan. Moylan spun to create space for himself after controlling the delivery and fired past Wogan to cut Drogheda’s lead to one goal.
Right after the restart, Kevin Doherty’s 11 men became 10 as Luke Heeney made a reckless lunge on Jarvis, sparking an unsurprisingly angry reaction from Shelbourne staff and players as Heeney was shown his second yellow of the game.
In the 55th minute of the game, Shelbourne levelled the game through the efforts of Will Jarvis. Shane Farrell tried on two occasions to smash the ball past the wall of Drogheda players, the second of which fell to Jarvis. Jarvis, with the help of a slight deflection, directed the ball past Wogan into the bottom corner.
The comeback was complete in the 64th minute when Jack Moylan notched his second of the day and his fifth in two games. Wood was again involved as he managed to work the ball into the box, and as it rolled through the defence and out the other side, Moylan was on hand to pass the ball home giving his side the first lead of the day.
The Reds scored their fourth goal of the game when Wood swung a corner in towards Paddy Barrett who towered over everyone as he headed powerfully past Wogan with 10 minutes remaining and the game would finish with this scoreline.
The game changed after the red card, but Shelbourne had already scored and were gaining momentum by that stage. Shelbourne fans will now be looking for St. Patrick’s Athletic jerseys to loan for next week’s FAI Cup final, and judging by the celebrations at full-time, the Reds believe in the side from Inchicore

Heeney is sent off for a reckless tackle on Jarvis. A crazy start to the second period.

HALF TIME: Drogheda United 2-0 Shelbourne
2-0 to Drogheda! No doubt about this one. Rooney delivers from a free-kick outside the Shelbourne box and although the initial danger is headed away, Foley catches the ball on the volley giving Kearns no chance. Who would have had this score after 35 minutes?
Disaster for Shelbourne as Drogheda take the lead! Dayle Rooney clips a ball into the Shelbourne box to Foley. The ball misses both Foley and Robinson and clips the post as Kearns stays rooted to the line. Robinson celebrated and Foley half celebrated but it didn't seem to get a touch on its way into the goal. 1-0 to Drogheda.
Jarvis and Wood link up again as Wood deftly sends Jarvis behind the Drogheda defence. Wood tries to get onto the end of the long one-two but can only get a slight touch on the ball as Drogheda clean up the mess.
Markey is played into the Shelbourne box and fires a pass across, but a crucial touch from Griffen is enough to divert the ball away from its intended target.
Shelbourne are looking like their usual resolute selves in this game, but apart from the Jarvis chance, they have created very little in the opposition's half.
The two Hull loanees link up and almost score as Wood plays a defence-splitting pass towards Jarvis who can only direct his effort at Wogan in the Drogheda goal. Huge chance for the away side.
The ball in from Wood was a dangerous one but Heeney does enough to scramble the ball out for a corner. The resulting set play from Wood is nowhere near as dangerous as the ball sails over everyone and out for a goal kick.
Aaron McNally picks up the game's first booking for a foul on the corner of his own box.
Wood finds Jarvis who drills the ball across the Drogheda box, the ball evading Farrell at the back post.
Markey wins an early corner for the home side but the delivery doesn't beat the first man
