Match Report
Shamrock Rovers crowned Champions after Derry draw
Shamrock Rovers have been crowned SSE Airtricity League champions for the third year in a row after Derry City could only muster a 0-0 draw against Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds.
City needed a victory in order to keep their title hopes alive but the Candystripes failed to find a way through a strong Sligo Rovers backline. It was the battle of the goalkeepers as Richard Brush and Brian Maher were on top form to keep the game scoreless. Derry will now look forward to their FAI Cup final matchup against Shelbourne at the end of the season.
It was an even opening 15 minutes to the game, with both sides finding their feet. The visitors were in charge of possession and had two chances through Cian Kavanagh and Joe Thomson but neither could find a way past Rovers keeper Richard Brush. The hosts grew into the game and had the best opportunities of the first-half on the 30 minute mark.
A close-range free-kick from Adam McDonnell was saved by Brian Maher and not even 30 seconds later the 21-year-old brilliantly tipped away an Aidan Keena strike to keep the scoreline level. Keena was causing the Candystripes problems with his direct play and forced Maher into another stop with a venomous shot from the edge of the box. John Russell’s men were closing down Derry efficiently and finding great success on the break but were just lacking the cutting edge.
The Derry City supporters were in full voice as they tried to push their side on in the second-half. Ruaidhrí Higgins’ men came out after the break strong as they held possession well and looked dangerous from set-pieces. Michael Duffy and Jamie McGonigle were introduced by Higgins in an attempt to find a goal but it simply was not the visitors' day.
