Galway Mark League Return In Style
Jenna Slattery scored twice either side of Lynsey McKey’s strike, as a clinical Galway United overcame Cork City at Eammon Deacy Park.
The win sees Galway close the gap to fourth placed Bohemians, now just a point off before Bohs’ crunch clash with league leaders, Peamount United, this evening.
Despite six places separating these sides in the league, this was also a meeting between two of the Avenir All-Island Cup’s final four, Galway going on to glory as they lifted the inaugural trophy.
It was a competitive opening spell with Ellie O’Brien lively in the Cork midfield.
Her early efforts were eclipsed though eight minutes in as Galway struck the first goal, Jenna Slattery architecting the move with a pass out to right winger, Rola Olusola, her well-timed cross finding Slattery’s surge into the box, the midfielder burying the ball into the bottom corner.
A clinical finish to a fine move for her seventh strike of the season.
Midway through the first half, the prominent Slattery swung a set piece delivery in which was met by the head of Jamie Erickson, her header drifting just past the post.
The same duo combined minutes later, the defender’s header this time looping just too high as Galway relentlessly sought a second, Cork under the cosh.
Having been largely a spectator for the opening thirty minutes, Galway goalkeeper, Jessica Berlin showed her alertness cutting out an O’Brien and saving well from Alix Mendez as Cork came back into the contest, seeking a strong end to the half.
Cork had worked their way into the contest, but Slattery’s shot separated them at the break.
Their lack of finishing proved costly though as, seven minutes into the second half, Galway’s captain, Lynsey McKey made it 2-0, her first goal of the season a timely one!
Before the hour mark, it was three, Slattery scoring her second to the delight of Eammon Deacy, Cork responding with a trio of changes.
Away goalie, Clodagh Fitzgerald then did well to deny McKey a brace, as Galway gave a debut to defender Annie Gough with twenty minutes remaining.
Olusola almost added a fourth late on, her shot finding Fitzgerald in the way, saving fantastically.
Capping a night of frustration for Cork was substitute, Chloe Atkinson, leaving the field late on due to injury, they will hope it is nothing too serious.
Next in the calendar is the FAI Cup commencement for both teams, Galway going to Athlone next Saturday night (7pm KO), Cork travelling to face FAI Amateur Cup champions, Terenure Rangers, in an intriguing tie of their own earlier on the same day (2pm KO).
