Match Report

Slattery Strike Secures Late Win For Galway

It was a late goal from Jenna Slattery that was all the difference in Turner's cross, in a match that was hampered by its wet and windy conditions, it was hard for either side to really stamp their authority on the game.

Galway were dominant in the first half but failed to make anything of their possession.
Cork finished strongly but didn't trouble the Galway keeper enough to warrant a goal.
Galway found a late winner through Slattery her free kick from way out the pitch floated into the net after being held up in the wind a vital three points for the away side!

In a first half that was played in terrible conditions its little surprise the quality of the match suffered as a result.

Galway, playing their first away match of the campaign, started this match much better than their first half performance last week in Eamonn Deacy Park.

United dominated the early proceedings passing the ball well and keeping possession but really struggled to get the ball into the final third and in particular into the Cork City box.

Gemma McGuinness had Galway's best efforts during the first half her shot after 26 minutes rolling just wide and again on 40 minutes her great touch allowed her a small bit of space to get her shot off but it was well blocked by Lauren Walsh who had a great first half.

Cork struggled to keep hold of the ball and looked to be struggling playing against what was a strong breeze against them forward Laura Shine was a lonely figure in the Galway half for the majority of the first half as the sides went in at the break to dry off and goalless on the scoresheet 0-0

Galway pushed in the early stages of the second half to find the opening goal but again lacked that attacking edge in the final third, their build up play was good in spells but again the weather seemed to cause them issues.

Cork had a good 15 minute spell after the 70th minute pushing Galway back in what looked to be a tired United side glimpses off last week's heartbreak on the cards again for the away side possibly.

As Cork pushed on they introduced some subs who had a good positive impact on the match. Christina Dring with arguably Cork's best effort of the match, her header in the 82nd minute going just over the crossbar.

Galway salvaged a win very late on when Jenna Slattery's free kick from 35 yards out caught out Abby McCarthey in goal for Cork her cross into the box getting caught up in the wind and rolling into the back of the net in the 89th minute to give Galway United their all important goal and crucially all three points
