Match Report
Substitute John Martin broke Drogheda hearts as he scored an injury time winner against rivals Drogheda United. Patrick Hobans return to the Dundalks line up proved successful as he set up Ryan O’Kane on 23 minutes before adding the 2nd of the game six minutes later, latching onto the rebound after Droghedas Colin McCabe stopped Johannes Yli-Kokkos first time strike at Oriel Park. Two unlikely goals on Freddie Draper 54, and Dayle Rooney 72, despite the away side going down to 10 men six minutes after the restart giving his side hope of a result. The away side showed great enthusiasm in the opening exchanges as Freddie Draper, Elicha Ahui and Darragh Markey all press for an opener, with Draper wasting a great chance on 18 minutes shooting high and wide. The Game was turned on its head when the prolific Hoban slipped the ball wide to O’Kane on the left firing past the onrushing McCabe to give the Lilywhites the lead albeit against the run of play. It was a double blow for Kevin Dohertys Charges as Evan Weir, who only returned to the starting lineup, had to be replaced through injury try to stop O’Kanes effort. Hoban once again was involved in the action only six minutes later when McCabe parried Yli-Kokkos first time acrobatic strike into his path with the talisman never in doubt added to his total as he closes in on 100 goals in this spell for the Lilywhites. The first 10 minutes of the second half were eventful to say the least, with Gary Deegan picking up his 2nd yellow of the game pulling down Yli-Kokko on 51 whilst Draper pulled one back for Kevin Dohertys side on 54 minutes despite being down to 10 men. With Dundalk seemingly on top Rooney had other ideas getting in behind to level it on 72 minutes to score the equaliser, with a comfortable flick over Sheppard in the home net. Dundalk changed shape and struggled to break down the away sides defence bringing on John Martin, a crucial decision for Stephen O’Donnell as the 24-year-old scored the winner in stoppage time to seal all three points for the home side. Heroic Martin struck late as Dundalk win Derby
