Pierrot hattrick helps Athlone beat Wexford
Wexford suffered a dent to their playoff hopes tonight with a 3-0 loss to Athlone Town in Lissywollen.
Franz Pierrot was the star of the show in the Midlands tonight, netting twice in the first half before securing the hat-trick late. In reality, he could’ve doubled his tally tonight.
The two sides exchanged chances in the opening twenty. Pierrot, Adam Lennon and Valeri Dolia looked dangerous bursting forward for Athlone before Mark Hanratty and Kian Corbally forced Enda Minogue to make a few saves.
Wexford would rue not making more of their chances in the 25th minute when Pierrot gave Athlone the lead. Dolia played it to him on the edge of the area and the #9 turned every which way looking for an angle to shoot. He bided his time, eventually firing it into the roof of the net for a deserved lead.
Athlone doubled their lead in the 38th minute when a floated free led to back-and-forth headers in the box. It ended with Patrick Hickey nodding it into Pierrot’s path, who turned and found the net once again.
Just two minutes later, Dolia was set through following a one-two with Pierrot but Heffernan was quick off his line to sniff it out. It was very nearly a mountain to climb for Wexford in the second half.
Wexford started the second half well and could’ve had a penalty in the 49th minute. Noah Van Geenan engaged Ethan Boyle in an attempted shoulder to shoulder that ended up looking a lot more like he simply barged Boyle off the ball in rash fashion. Wexford protests were waved away and Athlone may have very well got away with one.
Noel Heffernan almost handed Pierrot the hat-trick before the hour mark. Mathew Leal gave his striker a ball to chase and Heffernan stormed out to head it clear but fluffed his lines and let it drop right to Pierrot, who hit it on the turn. He could only drag it wide however.
Pierrot would have his much-deserved hat-trick in the 77th minute however. A cross came in from the left that substitute Jamar Campion Hinds met at the back post. He squared it to Pierrot who found the net via the post, capping off an excellent performance.
The win leaves Athlone five clear of Wexford in 3rd place. They travel to Ballybofey Monday for another very important match in the playoff race.

Full time.
Five minutes added on.
Pierrot is off. A wonderful performance.
Goal! Pierrot has the hat-trick after Campions Hinds meets a cross at the back post and squares it to him for a tap in. Totally deserved and Athlone now look set to secure a big result.
Hickey plays a lovely through ball to Pierrot but he can't quite get the desired contact on it. Really hunting for the hat-trick.
Duffy weaves his way to the byline but absolutely skews his final ball right out.
McCarrick dispossesses Tallon and crosses to Pierrot, but he slices it wide.
Dobbs gets through but Minogue is quick off his line to deny him.
Dolia skips past Piper and his square ball to Pierrot is palmed away by Heffernan.
It's nearly a calamity at the back for Heffernan. Leal gives Pierrot a ball to chase and Heffernan storms out to head clear but fluffs his lines and lets Pierrot get an effort off, that rolls wide.
Duffy and Conor Levingston have a little tussle on the sideline. Broken up and no cards are awarded.
Darragh Levingston has a long range effort dip just over. Wexford definitely better out of the half.
Van Geenan barges Boyle off the ball in the box and the ref waves penalty claims away. Athlone may be lucky there.
Dobbs is fed through but blazes over.
Back underway.
Ref blows it up as Athlone are on the counter. Hickey not happy. Nonetheless, it's 2-0 Athlone at the half.
One minute added on.
Dolia is set through following a one-two with Pierrot but Heffernan is quick off his line to make the save.
Goal! Athlone double their lead after a floated free leads to a back and forth of headers in the box, which results in Hickey nodding into Pierrot's path who turns and finds the net! 2-0!
Lennon knocks it inside to Leal and he fires over from range.
It's clipped to Reece Webb at the back post and he slices it far over. Poor attempt.
Goal! Athlone have the lead after Dolia knocks it to Pierrot, who turns every which way on the edge of the area, bides his time and fires into the roof of the net! Lovely finish.
Corbally cuts onto his left in the area and forces another Minogue save. Not a quiet afternoon for the home keeper.
Corbally gets the ball in midfield, drives forward and forces Minogue to tip over. Wexford starting to come into it.
Mark Hanratty forces a save from Minogue at the near post. First Wexford chance and they've a corner.
Lennon has time out right and Pierrot is all alone in the box, but Lennon overcooks his cross. Athlone definitely the better side in the first 15.
Dolia bursts forward looking for a pass but it's not on. His eventual shot drags wide.
It falls to Pierrot in the area and he's denied at point blank range by Heffernan. Good start from Athlone.
Athlone have the ball in the net after a quick direct move that ended with Pierrot nodding it in, but he's deemed to have committed a foul in the build up.
We're off.
Teams are out, kickoff is nigh.
Late change to the Athlone team. Abdikadir has been injured in the warmup and is replaced by Leal. Josh McGlone joins the bench.
It's a nice sunny day out. Perfect for a game of ball.
Athlone could put distance between themselves and the chasing pack with a win. They'll be hoping for a far better start than last week, when they were 4-0 down to Waterford at the break.
Wexford are two places and two points behind Athlone. A win tonight and they would leapfrog them and could end up in the playoff places depending on the Harps v Longford result tonight.
