Match Report

Early goal powers Wexford win

Any chances of a late promotion push for Athlone Town were dealt a hammer blow tonight with a 2-0 home loss to Wexford.

Jack Moylan opened the scoring 75 seconds in and substitute Jack Doherty clinched it five minutes from time. Both teams had chances throughout, but the visitors simply executed better.

Although Moylan's early effort was taken well, some questions have to be asked about the Athlone defending.

Evan Farrell played in Moylan who simply drove towards goal and buried his chance. A fine finish, but there wasn’t an Athlone defender near him when he got the ball. Paul Doolin will be furious with his backs for that one.

Athlone did manage to respond relatively well to the goal. James Doona and Glen McAuley tried near post efforts in the 7th and 15th minutes respectively, but both missed the target. While the build-up play was there, lack of execution proved costly.

Michaél Sclingermann also contributed largely to this staying 1-0 until late. The Athlone keeper pulled off numerous saves at his near post, consistently bailing out poor finishing from his strikers and poor defending from his defenders.

Athlone had a big penalty shout in the 25th minute. Doona pulled the ball back to Glen McAuley just inside the area, who went down after a Lorcan Fitzgerald intervention. The Wexford man seemed to have gotten the ball, but it really could have gone either way.

McAuley was again involved in what was the best chance of the game for Athlone. Aidan Friel delivered a pitch perfect cross to the back post, right onto McAuley’s head. He couldn’t keep it down however and sent the ball over. It became clear at this stage that this wouldn’t be Athlone’s night.

The tempo died down in the second half but chances still came and went. Jimmy Corcoran proved he may well be the reason Wexford came away with all three. Like his counterpart down the other end, Corcoran pulled off some notable near post saves. It would be hard to argue against him winning Man of the Match.

This game was ended five minutes from time when Jack Reynolds passed the ball back to Scott Delaney, whose slip allowed Moylan to pick up the ball and cross it to Jack Doherty, who finished at the near post.

An impressive road win for Wexford, who may have just put the nail in the coffin of Athlone’s promotion hopes.

Barnes misses a sitter, although he was offside. Just feels like one of those nights for Athlone.

  • 76'

Chance falls apart because Barnes and Meaney weren't on the same page. Athlone have shot themselves in the foot tonight constantly.

  • 68'

Doona bursts inside, only to be denied by Corcoran at the near post.

  • 63'

  • 46'

Wexford get the second half underway.

  • 45'

Half time. It's been even and both teams have had great chances, but the difference is Wexford actually took one 75 seconds in. Anyone's game in the second half.

  • 40'

Schlingermann with another big save. Becoming a recurring thing here.

  • 39'

Friel delivers a beautiful cross and McAuley heads over with the goal absolutely gaping. Yet another wasted opportunity.

  • 33'

Another big Schlingermann save at the near post. The Mayo man is bailing his side out constantly tonight.

  • 28'

Dylan Hand now has a chance with a glancing header from a free, but he just didn't get enough power on it. Corcoran caught it calmly.

  • 25'

Big penalty shout as Doona pulls it back to McAuley who goes down after a Lorcan Fitzgerald challenge. Was unclear whether the Wexford man won the ball or not, it genuinely could've gone either way.

  • 20'

A Schlingermann save is followed up by a Scott Delaney clearance. Top notch defending from the Athlone duo.

  • 15'

McAuley bursts through but Lorcan Fitzgerald does enough to put him off. Those are the sort of chances Athlone have to take,

  • 14'

Kurtis Byrne forces a save off Jimmy Corcoran.

  • 11'

  • 7'

Ball falls to James Doona at the back post but he skies it. Athlone have had two good chances since the goal.

  • 2'

Goal! Wexford take an early lead through Jack Moylan!

  • 1'

    Athlone get us underway.

  • Athlone team is now also in.

  • Wexford team is in.

  • That second encounter was a wild one. Despite Wexford winning 3-1 with fifteen minutes to go, the game ended 4-4 in a match neither side will be pleased with. Jack Moylan ran ragged on that day, which was his debut for Wexford. Containing him might ensure victory for Athlone tonight.

  • Wexford on the other hand are simply looking to move off the foot of the table before the season ends. They'll be hoping to have a more solid defence than in either of the previous encounters with Athlone, as they conceded three in the first match and four in the second.

  • Athlone come into this one looking to make a late promotion push, but if that is to happen, they'll need to rely on results elsewhere. An Athlone win tonight would seriously put the pressure on Bray to get a result tomorrow night in Cobh.
