Match Report
McGonigle double does it for Derry
Jamie McGonigle's double against Sligo Rovers sets up a 4th place showdown for Derry City in the final game of the season, with Bohemians also seeking the same position
A goal in both halves including a 75th minute volley sealed all three points for the Candystripes in the North West Derby.
City were fastest out of the block as they showed early intent to get a result from this tie. On 18 minutes McGonigle broke the deadlock as he put the ball across the goal beating Richard Brush.
Rovers grew into the game as the half went on with Mark Byrne coming close on multiple occasions at one point forcing Nathan Gartside into a superb save to deny the Mayo man.
The Bit O’Red were momentarily down to ten men as Robbie McCourt went off with a head injury just on the half hour mark, his replacement Regan Donelon not sufficiently warmed up to enter the fray so early. This allowed Derry to attack with numbers however nothing was to come of it.
Garry Buckley went close with a headed attempt, causing the City defence to scramble and clear the danger.
The hosts almost doubled their lead as McGonigle seemingly beat the offside trap to go one-on-one with the on-rushing Brush, his lobbed effort was eventually cleared off the line by former stoke academy captain Lewis Banks in added time.
The Sligo side returned after half time with added vigour peppering the Derry end with several attempts, however nothing was to come from it. City grew into the second half as the game become end to end and both sides added youth to find something in the half.
It was the Candystripes who produced the best chance, but once again Banks and John Mahon with last ditch interventions kept the difference at a minimum.
Sligo turned the screw looking for an equaliser as Figueira threatened Gartsides goal.
Derrys chance became limited to break aways but they made it count on the 75th minute when Garry Buckley headed clear Will Fitzgeralds cross into the path of McGonigle who launched a beautifully struck volley into the Sligo net.
Sligo went looking for an equaliser however Derry were solid at the back taking all 3 points
Next up for the Candystripes is a trip to Dundalk on the final day as they battle it out for fourth place with Sligo hosting Bohemians who are also looking to finish fourth and guarantee that final European spot.
