Match Report
Derry pick up first win at Sligo
Derry City picked up their first win of the season, away to Sligo Rovers; under the watchful eyes of their new management team of Ruaidhri Higgins and Raff Cretaro at the Showgrounds this evening.
The only goal of the game came from the penalty spot as Will Patching coolly slotted past Ed McGinty between the Sligo posts in the 51st minute.
It was a dogged affair, in which Sligo started brightest, but neither side really took control of the game. The match most played out in the middle of the park; Derry seemed to allow Sligo control of the ball for large periods focusing on their own organisation and discipline.
Midway through the first half, Derry started to agitate the status quo with former Manchester City Starlet Will Patching at the centre of proceedings, with some excellent break up play and even a shot from range with didn’t trouble the ever confident Ed McGinty in the Sligo goal.
The first half limped on with some niggling free kicks for both sides. Derry were the more aggressive team, and full-back Robbie McCourt required treatment just before half time.
Sligo’s currently longest-serving player Regan Donelon came on after the restart, for the first time this season in place of the injured McCourt.
However, with less than four minutes played in the second half Donelons lack of game time showed. He gave away a free kick in a dangerous area taking down a surging Will Fitzgerald.
The resulting free kick was put into the box. John Mahon was adjudged to have fouled David Parkhouse with only Sligo net minder McGinty remonstrating with the Roscommon man in the middle John McLoughlin.
It was that man again, Will Patching who stepped up and after a short stuttering run coolly slotted the ball to McGinty's right and into the net.
After the goal Sligo controlled much of the ball however Derry dominated the game through their organisation and discipline.
Sligo manager Liam Buckley emptied his bench in search of an equaliser, removing the usually effective Parkes, Gibson and young star Kenny with Byrne, DeVries and Collins entering the play.
This subsequently was unfruitful with Sligo only shot on target coming in the 89th minute from centre back John Mahon from 30-yards from goal, which done little to trouble Gartside between the Derry posts, who picked up his first clean sheet of the season.
A first loss of the campaign for the Bit O’Red as Ruaidhri Higgins Candystripes capture their first win of the season in his opening game in charge.
