Peamount Prove Too Strong For Cork City
Two second half goals in 60 seconds ensured Peamount stayed in title contention as they defeated Cork City 4-0 at Turners Cross.
City built on their recent good form by making a bright start. Lauren Singleton had the first chance of the game but struck her shot straight at Niamh Burke.
From here, Peamount took control however with Irish star Aine O’Gorman proving to be particularly influential linking up well with Stephanie Roche and Sadhbh Doyle on either flank.
The visitors spurned two great chances in the space of five minutes through O’Gorman and Doyle but both fired wide from inside the box.
O’Gorman was denied again just after the half hour when McCarthy made a great save at her near post to keep it scoreless.
Despite McCarthy’s heroics, City were hanging on and were eventually breached in the 38th minute when O’Gorman tapped home from close range.
The captain should have doubled her tally five minutes later but somehow fired wide in front of virtually an open goal after a terrific cross from Doyle.
The beginning of the second half was more stop start with the first real chance not coming until the 58th minute when Christina Dring’s shot inside the box rolled just wide.
City went close again five minutes later when Becky Cassin’s free-kick dipped just left of the near post which had Burke beaten.
All of their work was undone in the space of 60 seconds however when Peamount scored twice through O’Gorman and Roche with Sadhbh Doyle contributing heavily.
Alannah McEvoy made it 4-0 ten minutes from time at the second time of asking after her original shot hit the bar.
The remaining minutes were played out in dismal conditions after the heavens opened on and off the pitch. Ellen Dolan made it slightly easier for Peamount to contend with the conditions when she tapped home in the finals seconds to seal a 5-0 victory.
The win keeps Peamount within touching distance of Wexford while City have their last home game of the season next week.
