Match Report
Peamount Bounce Back with Emphatic Win
The Danny Murphy era got off to a disappointing start today as Cork City slumped to a – defeat at Turners Cross.
The visitors dominated from the off, operating a high press which Cork struggled to break. Stephanie Roche had two shots early on but both long range efforts failed to trouble Cork keeper Abby McCarthy.
Roche would get her goal however in the 14th minute with a perfectly struck volley from a corner to give the visitors a deserved lead.
The Peas didn’t let up and kept the pressure on. Aine O’Gorman was particularly influential along with Sadbh Doyle.
Indeed, it was O’Gorman who would get their second goal in the 34th minute when she got on the end of Doyle’s cross.
Their link up play would continue resulting in a third goal three minutes later, this time with the roles reversed. This time it was O’Gorman who crossed into Doyle who duly slotted past McCarthy to make it 3-0.
Things would get worse for the Cork keeper just before the break when Doyle got her second goal taking advantage of McCarthy being off her line. The result was a beautiful chip which left it 4-0 to Peamount at the break.
The opening quarter of the second half was a scrappier affair with the points already sewn up as the rain began to fall in Turners Cross.
Two quick fire goals from O’Gorman in the space of two minutes made it 6-0 after 70 minutes, thus ensuring her hat-trick in the process.
New signing Lauren Egboloniu nearly got one back for City in the 74th minute for what would have been a spectacular chipped effort. Her shot came agonisingly close as it hit the crossbar.
Michelle Doonan made it 7-0 in the 83rd minute when she headed in from close range to complete the rout.
Overall, it was a much-needed victory for Peamount as they end their seven game winless run to move into third in the table while Cork stay ninth ahead of a bottom of the table clash against Treaty United next week.
