Match Report
Back-to-back wins for Cork City
A Tunde Owolabi strike on the hour mark saw Cork edge Drogheda 1-0 in a tightly contested encounter at Weavers Park.
Play was halted early on as Darragh Crowley was forced off through injury after five minutes in what was a stop start half of football overall.
The first chance of the game came five minutes later when the influential Emmanuel Adeboyega flicked a header onto Dylan Grimes who was barely denied by Jimmy Corcoran in the City goal.
In what was a cagey half with clear cut chances few and far between, it was the midfielders who had the most work to do. Barry Coffey for City in particular stood out and had a half-volleyed shot of his own go just wide midway through the half.
Adeboyega and Ryan Brennan both linked up well with Freddie Draper in the first half and had chances of their own in quick succession which Corcoran managed to deny on both occasions.
City could have snatched a late goal on a stroke of half time when Ruairi Keating’s header went inches wide as the sides were deadlocked at the break.
Indeed, it was the visitors who started faster in the second half with Owolabi went close with an early effort.
The Belgian would eventually get his goal however on the hour mark, using his pace to get in behind the Drogheda defence before sliding the ball past the outcoming keeper Colin McCabe who came off his line to through and intercept.
A goal behind, Drogs piled on the pressure in the search for an equaliser, Draper continued to cause problems for the Cork defence and headed just over from a Dayle Rooney free kick in the 75th minute.
Try as they might however Drogs couldn’t get the goal they desperately needed as City held on for a third consecutive win.
