WFAI Cup: Quinn the hero as Shels edge dramatic cup-tie
Shelbourne had to come from 2-0 down, to book their place in the Semi Final’s of the EVOKE.ie FAI Women's Cup, a dramatic victory over Peamount United at Tolka Park this afternoon.
Peamount dominated the early stages of the opening half and could have been ahead by more than two goals, but two goals by Jemma Quinn late in the half helped the hosts lead the tie.
The Reds again get the better of their Dublin neighbours this season, after some poor of late this performance will be one they will look to replicate for the remainder of the season.
It was a frantic start to the game with Alannah McEvoy netting a 15 minute brace, the first came from a deep through ball by AIne O’Gorman which craved open the Shelbourne backline annoying McEvoy to use her pave to get in and score, their second came minutes later Heather O’Reilly misplacing a back pass which McEvoy intercepted before spotting Amanda Budden off her line for a cool finish to the net.
Peamount were in control and were pressing well but it was Shelbourne who netted the third goal of the contest, Jemma Quinn with a powerful header converting a lovely free kick by Alex Kavanagh making it 2-1 after 24 minutes, game back on.
O’Gorman and Dearbhaile Beirne both had chances but neither could find the mark past Budden, hitting the chip van behind the goal instead, their defence was ran ragged by the attack fro Peamount, O’Gorman had another attempt from range but Budden was equal to it.
Shelbounre finished the half with a flurry, fantastic build up play found Heather O’Reilly in space her pinpoint cross found Jessicia Gargan to head home for the equaliser after 37 minutes, the game now well and truly in the mixer for both teams, Shelbourne however remained on the offensive, the final action of the half saw Quinn doubling her tally with a tight finish after Noelle Murray played a fantastic pass to give them a 3-2 lead at the break.
The second half had a lot less drama than the first, both teams looked to be on the side of caution as very few chances materialised, O’Gorman tested Budden early but she was equal to the danger, Erin McLaughlin also had an attempt that Budden gathered with ease, Shelbourne had very few chances to extend their lead, defending a lot better in the second half, but a sigh of relief late on as Stephanie Roche had a chance but the danger was dealt with.
