Match Report

Shels edge Pea’s in seven-goal thriller

Shelbourne moved to the top of the table as they inflicted former leaders Peamount’s first loss of the season, courtesy of Noelle Murray’s last gasp winner.

Shels go three points clear at the top after displacing their Dublin rivals but the visitors have played a game less.

As expected, the match was a feisty affair which ended with four yellow cards and a red for Shelbourne manager Noel King.

Both benches had to be separated throughout the match, as scenes turned ugly and distasteful as the match went on and as the referee lost control of the contest.

Shels took the lead after just seven minutes through a looping header from Saoirse Noonan who was picked out by a long ranged free kick from Jessica Stapleton, which caught the Peamount defence napping.

Four minutes later, Shelbourne doubled their lead through Noonan again after great build up play by Jessica Ziu picked her out, and she made no mistake in smashing the ball into the corner of the net with a great finish.

The league’s top goal scorer Eleanor Ryan-Doyle pulled one back for the visitors as she calmly placed the ball into the corner of the net from the penalty spot.

Shels went in at half time 2-1 ahead, courtesy of a brace from Saoirse Noonan and Eleanor Ryan-Doyle’s goal from the penalty spot.

After half time, Emily Whelan scored a thunderous effort from the left that flew into the top corner, which looked to be the nail in Peamount’s coffin.

However, Aine O’Gorman flicked the ball over the top of the on-rushing Amanda Budden to half the deficit.

The visitors thought they snatched a point in injury time when Ryan-Doyle scored her second of the day and 14th goal of the campaign from close range.

But Murray’s flick over the top of goalkeeper Niamh Reid-Burke into the empty net from a long ball in the last kick of the game, sparked pandemonium around Tolka Park.
