Match Report
WNL: Peamount United v Shelbourne FC
Abbie Larkin's 11-minute hat-trick off the bench proved decisive in an eventful second-half, as WNL leaders Shelbourne eased to a 4-0 thrashing away at Peamount United and maintained their six-point gap atop the standings.
Jessie Stapleton's first-half penalty was the jolt which woke the hosts up from the slumber, having conceded multiple goalscoring opportunities in quick succession early on.
Jemma Quinn missed a pair of promising chances, before Stapleton saw her appeals for a penalty waved away after 20 minutes. Three minutes later, Sadhbh Doyle was harshly penalised for a handball and the defender made no mistake from the spot for her fifth of the campaign.
Peamount gradually got going after being felt hard done by the referee's decision, fashioning some half-chances of their own.
Erin McLaughlin hit the crossbar from a tight angle after twisting past Pearl Slattery, while Michelle Doonan deputised well for the division's top goalscorer Aine O'Gorman, sidelined here through illness.
Doonan forced a sharp leg save from Amanda Budden early in the second-half, while Stephanie Roche and Alannah McEvoy were constant threats in the final third for Shels to contend with. However, the tide turned shortly after the hour mark.
Larkin replaced a quiet Megan Smyth-Lynch, moments before watching Noelle Murray squander a sumptuous Stapleton through ball with only goalkeeper Niamh Reid-Burke to beat.
Peamount pressed intently as they searched for an equaliser, before she took matters into her own hands to give Shels a cushion they wouldn't relinquish.
The first was a gift from close-range: Reid-Burke's feeble pass into the 17-year-old's path undid Tiegan Ruddy's good defensive work moments earlier.
The second and third were a result of Peamount's half-hearted offside trap attempts. Keeva Keenan's one-touch pass set her up nicely, but Larkin still had to finish the chances - helped by an onrushing Reid-Burke, who no longer exuded confidence.
By contrast, opposite number Amanda Budden kept her clean sheet intact with an acrobatic stop late on which rather reiterated the contrast between these two sides. One folds under pressure, the other welcomes the challenge.
That's why Shelbourne travel back across the capital with a much deserved victory, while the gap between Peamount and the sides below them grows further.

FT: Peamount United 0-4 Shelbourne. The league leaders extend the gap between themselves and the Peas to 13 points after a second-half that escalated rather quickly, having held their nerve defensively during tight periods.
GOAL! Larkin notches a ruthless hat-trick! Tired legs and minds clearly for the hosts, who are all at sea defensively now and the 17-year-old -- now a full senior international -- doesn't need a second invitation to strike again.
GOAL! Larkin has her second in quick succession! Keeva Keenan tees her up beautifully, Peamount's offside trap is beaten rather effortlessly, and she profits as Reid-Burke rushes off the line and is beaten again. 3-0 Shels!
GOAL! SHELS DOUBLE THEIR LEAD! Oh, what an error by Reid-Burke! Larkin, who was marshalled well by Ruddy just moments prior, can't believe her luck as the ball is feebly passed straight into her path. She reacts quickly to slot home from close-range, doubling the Shelbourne advantage.
A triple change incoming for Peamount, fresh legs and a clear creative impetus in search of an equaliser -- which doesn't seem out of the question now...
A whole host of subs appear on the horizon, though one who has been introduced before that big chance... Abbie Larkin.
SHELS GO CLOSE! Stapleton tees up Murray with an excellent through ball, she has time and space to pick her spot... firing low and hard, but narrowly wide of the mark. 1-0 but it really should be two, at least.
CLOSE! Alannah McEvoy sprints down the byline, feeds Stephanie Roche with an inviting delivery... Budden comes off her line to add additional pressure, with Roche\'s header just narrowly wide of an open goal. Still 1-0, somehow.
Reid-Burke latest into the referee's book, after mistiming her challenge on the edge of the box. Free-kick floats narrowly over the roof of the net.
After a period of sustained pressure, the ball falls to Doonan inside the box. She forces a good, low leg save by goalkeeper Amanda Budden at her near post as Peamount continue to press intently for the equaliser...
Kick-off, second-half is underway and it appears as though there are no substitutes made by either side at the break. I'll let you know if and when that changes.
HT: Peamount 0-1 Shelbourne -- The visitors are deservedly ahead at the interval, though it could easily be all square at PRL Park right now. McLaughlin hit the woodwork, Doonan has done well in spurts, though Shelbourne are good value for their slender advantage.
One minute of stoppage-time to be played, and it's all Shels at the moment...
Murray and goalscorer Stapleton combine in transition to relieve some pressure off the visitors' backline, driving forward intently on the break... the former lets fly from distance but the effort trickles wide.
OFF THE CROSSBAR! Erin McLaughlin turns Pearl Slattery inside out, lifts her effort over goalkeeper Amanda Budden... but watches it crash off the top of the crossbar. Still 1-0 to Shels, a let off for them as Peamount are finding their groove now.
Murray is second into the referee's book for cynically stopping play from continuing, before Doonan does well to create a Peamount corner... from which Erin McLaughlin's looping header flies harmlessly over the crossbar.
After a water break on the touchline, match is back underway now.
GOAL! SHELS FROM THE SPOT! Jessie Stapleton had a penalty appeal waved away minutes earlier, for what the referee deemed as minimal contact, but now Sadhbh Doyle has been harshly penalised for a handball... from which the aforementioned defender slotted into the bottom corner! Shelbourne 1-0 Peamount.
With a bit of luck, Quinn could have a 15-minute brace... and Shels would be 2-0 up. Instead, her effort - this one less obvious from a tight angle - flashes wide as the visitors assert themselves in the final third once more.
BIG CHANCE! MISSED! Jemma Quinn is through on goal, with only the 'keeper to beat, but curls her effort narrowly wide of the far post.
First booking of the evening and Tiegan Ruddy can't have many complaints, unceremoniously charging a Shels player to the turf cynically - but importantly - halt the visitors' attack in its tracks. Resulting set-piece is well held by Reid-Burke, danger averted.
Big chance awaits Michelle Doonan today, leading the line for Peamount in place of O'Gorman, who I'm hearing is unfortunately sidelined by illness. A fast but frantic start by both sides so far, Doonan's just taken a heavy touch with her back to goal and it'll likely be that kind of evening for her, latching onto loose balls and trying to make the most of hold-up opportunities.
Kick-off! After a minute\'s silence, the referee blows his whistle and the match is underway.
The biggest team news is a notable absence for the Peas: the division's top goalscorer, Aine O'Gorman (16 goals in 15 appearances) doesn't feature in today's matchday squad. It'll be interesting to see how they adapt without her...
The two sides have gone through their respective warm-ups, and are back in the dressing rooms receiving their final instructions before kick-off now.
