Match Report

Peas put five past Shels

Emulating what may well be the title race after this fixture, Peamount put this one to bed early with five stunning goals from the boots of five different players in a game where Shels looking promising but never hit top gear.

PLR Park the venue, The Reds will be Green(ogue) with envy that they didn’t capitalise on some early chances by Sarah Rowe, Saoirse Noonan and Jess Ziu as Alannah McEvoy broke the deadlock 17 minutes in and it was all one way traffic to follow.

Synonymous with breath taking goals, Stephanie Roche then doubled their lead 10 minutes before the break, but Lucy McCartan may give her a run for her money in terms of goal of the season contenders, her smashing volley coming on the hour mark.

Substitute Lauren Kelly and captain Aine O’Gorman then concluded the tie with their strikes making it 5-0 and a tough day at the office for Noel King’s side.

The tension and gravity was evident from the get-go with plenty of close calls from both outfits early on. Tiegan Ruddy a big player in the first quarter of an hour, clearing her lines but also playing cutthroat passes to initiate the Girls and Green into attack.

Similarly Pearl Slattery was steadfast in defence for Shels but when it rains it seemingly pours and once the scoring account was open frustration seemed to take a grip of the visitors in place of their tenacity.

2-0 at the interval it looked a long way back for them and whilte Chloe Mustaki was determined to shove them into action in the second half it was to no avail.

McCartan’s thunderbolt began to sum things up as she rocketed the ball into the top right corner and dimmed Shels’s hopes even further.

66 minutes in Lauren Kelly replaced Beirne only to add to her tally four minutes later and current WNL top scorer Aine O’Gorman couldn’t resist but to get in on the fun as she sliced the ball past Amanda Budden with 10 minutes to go.

The victory now means Peas go into the driving seat of the league, three points clear with a game in hand on today’s opposition.

  • The teams are taking to the pitch and its nearly time!

  • 10 minutes until kick off in this six pointer!

  • Shels have released their stating output! Rowe starts, as does Graham. It's going to be an interesting game!

  • Peamount's line up is in. We await the visitors match day squad, 35 minutes until kick off!

  • With only 25 visiting supporters granted access by Peamount United’s organisers the Shelbourne team themselves will be hoping to make some noise in terms of a result at PRL Park come kick off.

  • Lacking Ryan Doyle the home line out will be relying more on captain Aine O’Gorman, Sadhbh Doyle and Stephanie Roche to pull through to hit the back of the net, while Shelbourne will be hoping to fill the holes in their midfield with recent Ireland call ups Jess Ziu and Ciara Grant.

  • Peamount too relished in cup glory last weekend, 2-0 the final score against Treaty United, meaning they are just one step away from successive cup titles if they surpass Wexford Youths. That all lingers in the past and future however as today they may only bring the confidence with them in the tactical battle that is to ensue.

  • On the flipside ex player, Mayo LGFA star and Aussie Rules Collingwood member Sarah Rowe has re-joined tonight’s away team recently and wasn’t long finding her range in their latest FAI Cup match against Cork City. While she didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet that day the 26 year old did aid her and her teammates’ progression to the semi-final stage where they are to come into contact with Galway WFC.

  • Added to that both sides have had a melee of transfers dispersed from their ranks with Birmingham City snatching Emily Whelan and Jamie Finn from Shels and the former league top scorer Eleanor Ryan Doyle out of United.

  • While James O’Callaghan’s outfit currently lie in second place and two points behind The Reds in top spot, they do in fact have a game in hand on the Tolka Park squad and so a win this evening may prove very significant come the end of the season as it would put them outright ahead with another fixture looming.

  • Big. Monumental. Hefty. Immense. While all of these words go towards the behemoth nature of a given thing they don’t quite scrape just how consequential this WNL clash between Peamount United and Shelbourne will be at 6pm tonight in Greenogue. My name is Alanna Cunnane and I'll be bringing you tonights match coverage!
