Match Report

Patching breaks Pat’s hearts at the Brandywell

It was the Will Patching show as his 93rd minute winner sealed a 2-1 over St.Pats at the Brandywell tonight.

On the eve of Ryan McBride’s 5th anniversary, the game caught fire from the off when on four minutes when Will Patching struck a beautiful right footed shot from outside the 18-yard box and into the bottom corner of Joseph Ananga’s net to give the hosts the lead.

The Candystripes dominated the first half with Pats struggling to deal with their high press off the kick outs but did have a chance to level in the 33rd minutes. Eoin Doyle played a great cross from deep into Billy King whose header rattled the Derry crossbar.

Pats to their credit, grew from this moment and equalised on 47 minutes Eoin Doyle’s effort off a corner came back out to Tim Grivosti who hit a great right footed effort from outside the box which found Brian Maher’s net.

Both sides searched for a winner in what was a very entertaining second half. Chris Forrester jinked past a couple of Derry defenders and struck a long-ranged effort which sailed just over the bar around the hour mark.

Danny Rafferty had a glorious chance for Derry on 70 minutes when Brandon Kavanagh’s pass put him through on goal but struck it straight at Ananga at the near post.

It was all about Will Patching however as he got his second goal in the 93rd minute when the ball fell to him from a corner and his right footed strike from 20 yards out broke the hearts of the Inchicore side.

The win means Ruaidhri Higgins’ charges leapfrog their opponents into second while Tim Clancy will be ruing some slack defending at the end which could cost them in a potential title race down the line.
