Athlone Town returned to winning ways in the league with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Bohemians in Lissywollen this evening.

Despite the sides being well separated in the table, Athlone showed no fear in putting Bohs to the sword this evening. Having lost to Shelbourne narrowly a week prior, this is a statement result.

Since returning to league action, Bohemians have taken one point from three games, tonight a tough loss to burden, put Athlone were well deserved and look to move up the table in the final weeks.

The Midlanders started the brighter of the sides and opened the scoring 17 minutes into proceedings, a one-two from Lauren Karabin and Madision Gibson, saw the former race into the area and play a ball across the area. Despite the intervention from Katie Burdis to prevent Carly Wetzel tapping in, the ball fell to Isabel Ryan to finish.

Ryan netted her first goal of the season in the league for her side on her first start. It was a dream moment for her and Athlone themselves were in dreamland, 22 minutes in, Gillian Keenan doubled their lead.

Gibson taking a short corner to the near post, Kate Slevin played the ball back for Gibson to float a cross into the area, inside the six yard box was Keenan to direct a free header into the right hand bottom corner past Rachael Kelly.

Athlone were in control in the half as Bohemians were unable to find the back of Katie Keane’s net, a strong solid performance in that half paved the way for a cruising performance in the second.

Athlone were gifted the chance of a third goal as a lack of communication between Lisa Murphy and Kelly following a pass back in their defence from Burdis, Gibson raced in to gather possession but was fouled by Kelly in the area.

Penalty awarded, goalkeeper booked, Gibson stepped up and despite Kelly guessing the right way, her left footed effort was too high to the net. 

Town were commanding the second half and only on the field for two minutes Dana Scheriff made it 4-0 to the home side in the 62nd minute. Slevin with a long ball over the top allowed the American to race it, beat Murphy with her strength and chipped Kelly from close range.

Sheriff wrapped up the tie netting her second and her side's fifth goal of the contest with a close range header in the 78th minute. A well worked move starting with Chloe Singleton in midfield, marauding forward playing down the right flank. Playing the key pass to see Isabel Ryan free to race toward the by-line, before crossing for Scheriff to head home.
