Match Report

Athlone Town secure second place beating Bohs

Athlone Town did all they could to force a WNL title play-off with a 2-1 victory over Bohemians at Dalymount this evening but the result was not enough in the end.

The Town needed a win but Shelbourne's win over Wexford saw them out of the title race regardless to finish in a respectable second in the league.

Emily Corbett headed in her 23rd goal of the season to see the visitors take the lead in the second-half but Bohs hit back through Kira Bates-Crosbie.

Substitute Scarlett Herron sent Athlone back into the lead with 13 minutes remaining after she headed in from a corner.

The Town held on for their 17th win of the season as they now look forward to the FAI Cup final next weekend.

Both sides grappled for control in the opening stages of the game but neither could really get on top, resulting in a scrappy start.

Athlone began to see more of the ball after ten minutes of play but Bohs would have the first major chance of the game.

On 17 minutes, a Lisa Murphy free from inside the Athlone half found the head of Chloe Darby and she turned the ball across goal but Ciara Glackin had the time to collect.

The visitors had a chance soon after when Emily Corbett received the ball in the 18-yard box and turned quickly to get a shot away but went too high to trouble Rachael Kelly's goal.

Minutes later, Kelly had to react quickly after Roisin Molloy found Corbett in the area and the 'keeper was forced to halt the striker's header.

After half an hour, Katie Slevin shot from over 20-yards to rattle the Gypsies' crossbar as Athlone continued to probe.

Bohs pushed for the lead late in the half and Chloe Darby almost sent the hosts ahead with a looping effort from outside the box on 41 minutes, but there was just too much on it and it floated over.

The opening goal would come early in the second-half when Corbett got on the end of a well-worked break by the visitors.

Though they had taken the lead, Athlone retreated into themselves and Bohs took the initiative and equalised when Bates-Crosbie finished well past Glackin on 64 minutes.

The Town found their focus later in the game and found the winner through Herron's head after a corner-kick.

Several more chances for the away team could have seen them win by more but they would remain ahead by a single goal until full-time.
