Bohemians and Athlone played out a 1-all draw in fierce conditions this evening at Dalymount Park.
Erica Burke gave the hosts the lead in the 21st minute after a long range lofted ball from Lisa Murphy wasn’t dealt with. Roisin Molloy made it 1-1 five minutes into the second half to see that this finished even.
Kick-off was delayed for roughly 15 minutes as a faulty net caused by the weather required the groundsman’s attention. This was not the only impact the weather would have.
In the 21st minute, Lisa Murphy launched a free towards the Athlone goal. The lofted cross turned shot caused Niamh Coombes to back pedal and tip it onto her bar. The ball fell to Burke who slotted home to give Bohs the lead.
The effect of the weather could be seen here and anytime Coombes took a kickout. On at least four separate occasions, Coombes’ kickouts were caught in the wind. Murphy probably benefitted from lofting a free towards the Athlone goal with so much wind to carry the ball there.
Athlone did apply some pressure toward the end of the half. Dana Scheriff looked dangerous on one occasion, but to no avail. The American would provide a piece of great play to give Athlone the equaliser however.
Five minutes into the second half, Scheriff got the ball in the hosts’ box. She did well to see off pressure from numerous defenders and twisted and turned, working her way into a position to get a ball off.
She managed to find Roisin Molloy through a square ball, who could not miss the glaring tap in. At 1-1, the momentum was with Athlone.
Much like last week however, 'the Town' could not make use of plenty of possession in opponent territory. In the 64th minute, Molloy worked her way into the box, but to no avail.
Emily Corbett had a chance from inside the box with just under 20 minutes to go to potentially get a second goal in as many weeks, but the effort was well wide.
Perhaps the chance to win it came with three minutes to go. Yet another Kelsey Munroe corner ended up in the mixer and a goalmouth scramble ensued. Athlone just couldn’t get a shot off and Bohs cleared, essentially sealing the draw.
In the end, a draw is a fair result. Both teams host title challengers next week. Bohs welcome Wexford Youths whilst Athlone host Shels.
