Match Report
O’Brien-Whitmarsh Strikes Late To Salvage Draw for Cork
Joe O'Brien Whitmarsh's 81st minute strike cancelled out Adam Foley's goal as the sides finished level at 1-1 apiece at Turners Cross.
It was a cagey opening to the game with both teams in full knoledge of what was at stake considerig there were two points seperating the teams in the relegation battle heading into the game.
Drogheda started the better with Darragh Markey in particular proving to be particularly influential and nearly found Adam Foley who was inches away from opening the scoring on eight minutes.
City's first chance of the game came on twenty minutes when Tunde Owolabi attempted to find Ruairi Keating with a dangerous cross but the in form striker, with an open goal at his mercy, was unable to take the pass much to the frusration of the home support.
That opportunity however sparked a purple patch for City who began to dominate possession and looked threatening going forward. Drogs' keeper Andrew Wogan showed impressive instincts to deny both Owolabi and Gordan Walker in the space of ten minutes as the sides entered the break deadlocked.
Foley and Brennan continued to link up well in the second half and indeed it was the dynamic duo who would put Drogheda ahead in the 67th minute when Foley slotted past Corcoran after an excellent pass from the aforementioned midfielder.
City to their credit reacted well with Joe O'Brien Whitmarsh in particular coming to the fore. He put through Keating but was unable to round the keeper in the 73rd minute.
The young midfielder wouldn't be denied however as the got the equaliser ten minutes from time after a superb half volley from John O'Donovan's cross to put the game on a knife edge a 1-1 heading into the final minutes.
That's how it would end as both sides would finish with one each out of the relegation six pointer. Drogheda will probably the more disappointed considering if they had held on the gap would have stretched to five points.
There is a long way to go.
