Match Report
Kerry End Four Game Losing Streak Against De Town
Kerry FC ended a four game losing streak after holding Longford Town to a scoreless draw in a scorching Mounthawk Park this evening.
Gaxha had chances in both halves to put Kerry ahead but Jack Brady was equal to each effort, whilst Longford struggled to get any real clear cut opportunities.
Kerry now travel to Athlone Town, a place they have found memories of as they picked up their only league win in that Athlone Town stadium, whilst Longford face a huge trip to Wexford, a vital clash in the playoff race.
It was a real summers night in Mounthawk Park, with the heat proving sapping for both sides. Leo Gaxha had the first shot in anger, his shot across goal was well met by Jack Brady down to his left on the 10 minute mark.
Longford were slow coming into battle but had a huge chance to take the lead a couple minutes later, after Wixted picked off McGrath in midfield, Adeyemo looked set to be through 1 on 1 but a great recovery challenge from Aladesanusi prevented the shot. The ball fell to Wixted at the edge who had his effort on goal blocked on the Kerry scramble.
That was about it for the chances in the first half, as the water break midway through the period which was necessary for player safety, did kill off any momentum either side had built up early on. The latter stages of the half were scrappy, with a number of fouls, including two that produced bookings for Kerry for Teahan and Kennedy.
The second half saw the tempo pick up once more, with more open free flowing passing and movement, Longford in particular looking to run the channels and get their two wingers involved. The first effort on goal though came from a central position, Gary Armstrong given time and space, his effort from 25 yards was well met by Axworthy in the Kerry net at full stretch,
At the three quarter mark, Kerry had a huge chance to to take the lead, a Longford corner was cleared up to halfway where Okwute battled hard and eventually got the ball to Gaxha, who sprinted into space where he got a shot on goal but his left footed effort was straight at Jack Brady once more.
With the second half water break in action, both sides turned to their benches, with Bastian Hery one of the names introduced by Longford, along with August goal of the month winner Kennedy Amechi in for the Kingdom.
With the clock ticking down, Kerry were the more likely side to pick up a late winner, holding more of the ball as Longford were showing signs of tiredness.
Despite their best efforts though, the Kingdom were not able to fashion a clear cut opportunity to steal the three points late on, but will be pleased with another point at home, and their second clean sheet in the league of Ireland.
