Match Report
Waterford leave it late to snatch draw in Athlone
Waterford salvaged a point with an injury time equaliser from Cameron Cresswell against Athlone Town in Lissywollen tonight.
Athlone had the lion's share of chances in the first half as their plan to hit Waterford on the counter was paying fruition, with good chances falling to Frantz Pierrot and Noah Van Geenan. However, both were wasteful.
A massive call went against Athlone in the 25th minute. Aaron Connolly played it into Pierrot and he was pulled down by Killian Cantwell, catching the Blues defender in the face as he went down. The ref sided with Waterford and the home side were incensed, with both Connolly and Pierrot receiving yellows; Pierrot for the foul, Connolly for dissent.
Nonetheless Athlone didn’t let this deter them and took the lead four minutes later. Jamar Campion Hinds intercepted a Waterford ball across the edge of their own area and cut onto his left foot. Much like his screamer at Ferrycarrig Park a few weeks ago, he found the top corner. An unbelievable goal to give Athlone a lead they deserved.
Waterford came into a bit more near the break but to no avail. Enda Minogue ensured his side went in with the lead when he pulled off a brilliant save at point blank range from Ronan Coughlan in first half injury time. At the break, the scoreline was fair.
The second half lacked major chances for either side until the very end of the half. Athlone continued with their plan to hit Waterford on the counter but looked increasingly rudderless as the match went on, whilst Waterford just failed to create chances of note.
Right at the end it got hectic. Waterford won a free right outside the box in the 87th minute and Creswell’s effort was blocked by the wall. In the next phase of play, he found Christie Pattinson with a wonderful ball to the back post but Pattinson hit the post and it looked like it would be one of those days for the visitors.
Injury time threw up heartbreak for the hosts however. In the 93rd minute, a long ball was sent in hope to Ronan Coughlan. Noah Van Geenan dealt with this but it fell to Cresswell, who found the bottom corner with a good finish, sealing the draw.
Athlone snap a home losing streak, but this will feel like two points dropped.
