Match Report

Waterford end season in second place

Waterford secured a second-place finish in the First Division with a 3-2 win over Athlone at the RSC, booking a promotion play-off fixture against Treaty United on Wednesday.

The Blues looked to have things wrapped up at half-time as they led 3-0, but the visitors fired back early in the second period to make a contest of the fixture.

Wassim Aouachria headed in for Waterford on 18 minutes after Athlone 'keeper Vladislav Velikin parried a Phoenix Patterson corner into the Moroccan's path.

Patterson struck the hosts' second score, running at goal from the left and bending the ball in at the far post from an unlikely angle.

Aouachria set up Junior Quitirna to strike into goal from a favourable distance as the break approached.
Two quickfire goals after the restart would see Athlone back into contention though.

Adam Lennon found himself in space on 49 minutes and hit past Paul Martin. and less than three minutes later Jarlath Jones hit goal with a fantastic free-kick.

However, an 83rd minute Aouachria goal ensured the Blues would end the regular season on a high.

Waterford gripped the game after opening scoring through Aouachria on 18 minutes and never really let their control over affairs slip after that.

Just over ten minutes later, the Blues had their second of the evening thanks to some magic from Patterson, who in scoring his 17th league goal of the season secured the division's golden boot.

Junior's strike in the 40th minute to see each of the Blues' attacking trio on a goal each.
Aouachria came close to getting another before the break only for Jarlath Jones' clearance off the line.

Slack defending after the restart led to Lennon opening Athlone's account with a nice finish and the visitors put their opponents under further pressure when Jarlath Jones hit a fine goal from a dead ball on the right.

On the back foot, Danny Searle' managed Waterford's game well, making multiple defensive introductions to close up shop, when Aouachria was played in on goal late-on by Junior, he ensured the Deise head into the play-offs in the best of form.
