Peamount continue on title track
Peamount United continued what seems to be an inevitable march towards the WNL title with a dominating display over Athlone, beating the Midlanders 4-0.
It was good goals all around for Peamount, with the goals coming courtesy of Stephanie Roche, Sadhbh Doyle and a superb Lucy McCartan brace.
The league leaders wasted little time getting to work in this one. Five minutes in, Aine O’Gorman was fouled on the edge of the box by Ava Dolan, who received the games only yellow card for the offence. Stephanie Roche stepped up and hit it bottom corner, as if she had taken a penalty.
In the 17th minute, things got even better. Peamount were playing passes at will and the ball found it's way to Lucy McCartan. The midfielder took her shot first time, curling it into the far top corner. To say it looked routine would be an understatement.
Athlone did have a spell of slight pressure, testing Peamount’s set piece defending with a series of corners and frees. From open play, Kellie Brennan and Emily Corbett had half chances.
The deal was sealed in the 42nd minute. Once again, Peamount were passing the ball at will. Sadhbh Doyle was played through and slotted past Abbiegayle Ronayne. This game never looked in doubt for Peamount and this goal confirmed it.
Ten minutes after the restart Lucy McCartan only went and did it again. Build up play resulted in Peamount striking the post, before the ball fell to McCartan way out. She spotted Athlone substitute goalkeeper Niamh Coombes off her line and took her effort first time, sending it into the net. That’s two goals in one game from her that could challenge for goal of the week.
Megan Smyth-Lynch had a nice cameo appearance for the hosts after she came on for an injured Sadhbh Doyle in the 65th minute. However, Coombes in the Athlone net also had a decent cameo, denying Smyth-Lynch on three separate occasions. She pulled off a point blank range save at the back post, came off her line to smother a chance after Smyth-Lynch carved through the Athlone defence and pushed over an attempted chip all in the final fifteen, possibly keeping this from looking very bad.
Nonetheless, Peamount move to four clear at the top of the league, with a game in hand on Wexford in second. It seems the title is certainly headed back to South Dublin.

Peamount can go seven points clear of Wexford at the top with a win, which they've managed over Athlone twice this season already, despite a less than impressive performance at Lissywollen. Should they achieve that, another title for this club will look inevitable.
The Peamount lineup is now in.
