Peamount edge win in Midlands
A more rigid than anticipated affair was demonstrated between Peamount United and Athlone Town this evening in the Midlands where the reigning champions finished out the game with 10 players and a deserved but hard fought 2-1 victory.
All chaos broke lose inside 10 minutes when Emily Corbett lobbed Naoisha McAloon for the opener and just for a second fans of the Women’s National League thought the shock of the season was about to take place.
However, James O'Callaghan’s side dispelled such a dream like story and restored reality on the half hour mark via Alanna McEvoy before captain fantastic Aine O'Gorman got the final goal of the game with 58 minutes elapsed and it came down to the wire when Tiegan Ruddy received a straight red in the closing stages.
After positional rivals Shelbourne sent Treaty United home from Tolka Park with their tails between their legs in a 7-2 conquering earlier in the day, Peas knew they had to come up trumps in the Midlands, but would have been shocked by the profound ability and determination they were met with.
The hosts were bold going forward from the get-go and were rewarded for their strives when Fiona Owens assisted Corbett with a long ball over the top which was expertly put away.
The Girls in Green and McEvoy responded in stunning fashion, thundering the ball towards goal and scoring a shot which no keeper would have had a chance with, sending the sides into the break equal at 1-1.
The second half saw Peamount crank up the gears, O’Gorman’s eventual winner characterized by a blistering long range strike unfolding in the 58th minute.
Ruddy then paid the price for denying a clear Athlone goal-scoring opportunity as she was sent marching to the stands, but the 10 woman away outfit showed their grit to hold out for all three points with their 2-1 result.
