Match Report

Mata Magic Secures Hatrick Of Points At The Bowl

Sligo Rovers had to come from behind twice to earn all three points this evening against UCD courtesy of a Max Mata hat trick at the Bowl.

It was a sloppy start from both sides but it was UCD who were first to capitalise on a defensive error. After just 5 minutes, Johan Brennfalk left a backpass short which was seized upon by the lively Danu Kinsella-Bishop. The striker did really well to chase down the backpass before a low cross found the onrushing Alex Nolan who fired home with an emphatic finish.

Sligo responded with intensity but were perhaps too eager with Mata being frequently called back for offsides including on the 11th-minute mark when the ball was in the back of the UCD net only to be ruled out for offside, much to the disappointment of the travelling Sligo fans.

However, Mata finally managed to time his run correctly and got his reward midway through the first half. An excellent ball from Liivak down the right flank set Mata up for his first goal of the season.

The intensity of the play died out as the first half progressed. John Russell’s men retained plenty of possession but failed to meaningfully test Healy. UCD meanwhile did look threatening on the break, particularly from their wide men Behan and Nolan. Their best effort from that came in the 26th minute when Higgins set Nolan free out wide. After cutting inside the winger fed Kinsella-Bishop whose shot on the turn was well saved by McNicholas.

After the break, UCD once again struck early in the half. On this occasion, a fine counterattack move started with Donal Higgins in the midfield. He sprayed the ball wide to Ciarán Behan who dribbled down the left wing before slotting an inch-perfect pass to Kinsella-Bishop to slot home UCD’s second goal of the game.

However, Sligo Rovers once again managed to find an equaliser. After a mazy run by the substitute Fabrice Hartmann, Michael Gallagher was judged to have committed a handball in the area. Mata stepped up for his second of the game by slotting the spot kick into the bottom right corner.

It wasn’t long before Mata was once again lining up a spot kick. Alex Nolan’s foul on the very edge of the box gave Mata the opportunity to seal all three points and once again he didn’t disappoint this time by drilling the ball down the middle.

The Students will be bitterly disappointed to come away empty-handed from their first home game of the season. Ultimately, it was the substitutions from John Russell and the quality of Max Mata which appeared to turn the tide and grind down the young UCD side, despite the Bit O’Red’s not being at their very best. Nonetheless, some positives to take for UCD who are proving to be tougher opponents than many season previews had predicted.

Next up for UCD is a visit to Turner’s Cross to face newly-promoted Cork City in a vital game. Meanwhile, Sligo Rovers who will be delighted with 4 points from their opening two games, play Drogheda United at Weaver Park.

  • 94'

Fulltime here at the Bowl and Sligo manage to get the win in the end. Full match report on the way.

  • 90'

4 additional minutes for UCD to salvage something here...

  • 86'

Looked like another penalty for Sligo but Radosavljevic was judged to have dived and earned a booking for his simulation.

  • 81'

Mata again from the spot! This time Alex Nolan is the culprit and Sligo take the lead for the first time this evening.

  • 75'

UCD's turn to go close as Kinsella-Bishop finds space on the edge of the box only to narrowly fire it over the bar.

  • 73'

So close for Fitzgerald after a lovely dribble across the edge of the UCD box. It fizzed across goal and the Sligo strikers will be regretting not making an effort to go for the tap-in.

  • 71'

It was excellent play by the substitute Hartmann which earned the all-important penalty. Exciting few minutes ahead here at the Bowl!

  • 68'

No problem for Mata who slots it into the bottom corner for his second of the game! We are level once again.

  • 67'

Penalty for Sligo after a bursting run into the UCD box.

  • 65'

Plenty of Sligo pressure around the UCD box ends in Fitzgerald blasting the ball over the bar.

  • 62'

716 is the attendance for the first game of the season here at the Bowl.

  • 60'

Close! Hutchinson finds Barlow with a powerful cross. The midfielder guides it on but it goes narrowly wide.

  • 58'

Double change for Sligo as Hartmann and Radosavljevic are introduced for Liivak and Bolger.

  • 56'

More positive from the away side as they stroke the ball nicely down the right flank. Mata then drags the ball across the box which is well-controlled by Barlow. He strikes it well but Healy is alive to the danger and holds it well.

  • 53'

First change of the evening as Dignam replaces Norris.

  • 51'

Once again UCD strike early in the half and again Sligo make it difficult for themselves.

  • 48'

UCD retake the lead! A long ball out of defence causes Sligo a lot of problems as Behan controls it before slotting the ball into the path of Kinsella-Bishop. The striker gets there in the nick of time ahead of the keeper to nudge it home. Game on!

  • 47'

Norris gives the ball away sloppily which is well-read by Hutchinson who bursts goalwards. His effort is drilled just over the bar.

  • 45'

The teams have emerged and there are no changes for either side. Kinsella-Bishop gets us back underway.

  • 45'

Halftime at the Bowl and its honours even between UCD and Sligo Rovers.

  • 45'

1 additional minute here at the Bowl as Kinsella-Bishop is down receiving treatment for UCD.

  • 41'

Excellent break for UCD which finds Nolan earns UCD a corner for a deflected cross. Comes to nothing but positive play by the Students.

  • 38'

The home fans sing 'is this a library?' to the travelling Sligo fans...only in Belfield!

  • 35'

Plenty of possession for the away side but little to test Healy in the last few minutes.

  • 28'

Another break from UCD as Behan's cross finds Nolan at the back post but it's a difficult one which the winger can't quite get a clean connection on. This has been a very open game since the equaliser.

  • 26'

Excellent play from UCD, Higgins sprays the ball wide to Nolan on the right flank who cuts inside and finds Kinsella-Bishop. The striker's shot on the turn is well saved at close range by McNicholas.

  • 21'

That equaliser was coming and Mata manages to keep himself onside on this occasion and slots home with a fine finish.1-1 at the Bowl!!

  • 20'

Cheers from the UCD fans as Mata once again picks up the ball from a through ball only to be pulled up for offside.

  • 16'

Sligo starting to put the Students under some pressure. This time Bolger is the next to get a cross in which finds the head of Mata. It's a difficult task and the striker nods it just over the bar.

  • 11'

The ball is in the net but it's disallowed! Gallagher loses the ball to Hutchinson who burst into the box and finds Mata who cooly slots home only for the linesman to raise his flag.

  • 9'

Not the start Sligo wanted at all. Both sides have been guilty of misplaced passes but the Bit O'Reds will be bitterly disappointed to concede like that. Excellent from Kinsella-Bishop on his return to League of Ireland football.

  • 5'

Goal for UCD! A sloppy start from both sides but the Student are the first to capitalise as Kinsella-Bishop works hard to win the ball high up the pitch and Nolan is there to pounce and slot the ball into the bottom right corner.

  • 2'

Great skill by Barlow to turn Keaney on the end line but his pull back to the edge of the box fails to find a Sligo player.

  • 1'

Max Mata gets us underway here at the Bowl!

  • Kickoff 5 minutes away as excitement builds around the Bowl!

  • Both sides earned an impressive 1-1 draw against the odds in their opening fixtures of the season so we should be expecting two sides full of confidence for tonight's clash. The side's respective goalscorers last week Ciarán Behan and Lukas Browning will be ones to watch.

  • Meanwhile, two changes for UCD, Danu Kinsella Bishop and Ryan Bowden replace Jessie Dempsey and the injured Adam Wells.

  • No changes for Sligo Rovers as John Russell names the same starting XI that drew the season opener against Shamrock Rovers.

  • Good evening from the UCD Bowl! I'm Conor Paterson and I'll be bringing you live updates for the first game here in Belfield of the 2023 Airtricity League Premier Division as well as a full post-match report on full-time. Kickoff here at 7.45 pm so standby for team news as soon as I get it.
