Wexford Youths extend league lead at the hands of Treaty United

Wexford Youths extended their lead at the top of the Women’s National League with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Treaty United at Ferrycarrig Park.

A blistering long range early effort from Edel Kennedy coupled with a quick-fire pair of goals just before the break from Kylie Murphy and Ciara Rossiter left the home side three goals to the good at the break.

Treaty despite making a number of changes at the break were improved in the second half and proved much more difficult to break down defensively keeping a shutout for the second forty five minutes.

It was always going to be a tough task for the division’s bottom side against the league leaders particularly with the opportunity Wexford had knowing that Shelbourne had lost in Athlone.

Just four minutes into the game Edel Kennedy stretched to intercept a loose clearance from a Treaty defender before her second touch, a volley, found the top corner from a full 30 yards.

Ireland international Ellen Molloy limped off after twenty minutes and was replaced as a precaution for tougher tests to follow in their bid for a league and cup double.

Stephen Quinn’s side dominated the exchanges but it would take almost the entire half for the league leaders to breach their opponents. A Wexford corner arrived into the six yard box and Kylie Murphy rose highest to meet it with her head and send the ball past Trish Fennelly Hunt to double the lead.

A moment later it was three as Ciara Rossiter found herself at the end of a lovely move finding the bottom of the net from the edge of the box.

Don O’Riordan rang the changes at half time making three subs and it worked for the Shannonsiders as they kept the leaders scoreless in the second period.

It’s another tough day for Treaty as Wexford Youths turn their attention to the FAI Cup Semi Final next week against in form Athlone.
