Wexford Youths see off Treaty United on Shannonside
Wexford Youths extended their unbeaten run to five games in the WNL as they defeated Treaty United 3-0 this evening in a game tainted by two significant second-half injuries.
Becky Watkins headed in for the Youths on 12 minutes and the visitors would go two goals up just before half-time after Emma Walker netted for the visitors.
The second-half was marked by misfortune with Wexford losing Michaela Lawrence to a serious looking injury after her tackle on Amy Madden, which also saw her receive a second-yellow card.
Amy Madden was brought down soon after play resumed and she too was carried off the field after a lengthy stoppage.
Wexford pushed as play restarted again and Ellen Molloy secured their third goal on 96 minutes while Treaty failed to create much with an extra player.
Rainy conditions in Garryowen meant the game got off to a slow start, with each side feeling the other out.
Wexford's quality soon began to shine through though and they began to put pressure on Treaty's defence.
Madden was forced to make a last gasp clearance to prevent her side going behind after ten minutes as Wexford's Molloy rounded Mitchell and got a shot away.
The result was a corner to the Youths, who went a goal ahead after Walker's delivery created a scramble in the box and Watkins headed in opportunistically.
Wexford continued to control most of the ball after scoring but Treaty did enjoy some success on the break.
Cara Griffin offered a good target for Treaty to play to up front but she lacked support whenever she broke.
The forward would win a number of set-pieces for the home side but the Mid-Westerners never came close to equalising.
Wexford continued to have the better chances.
A Watkins effort glided just over the Treaty crossbar on 29 minutes while Mitchell had to slide out of her goal to deny Kylie Murphy possession in front of goal ten minutes later.
The home side defended as best they could but would go into the break trailing by two goals.
Ellen Molloy broke into the Shannon-sider's area half-way through two minutes additional time and though her shot was excellently parried away by Mitchell, Walker was there to follow up and net the visitor's second.
Wexford would go on to control affairs in the second period of play though any real opportunities evaded them for much of the half.
Unfortunately, the half was marred by misfortune as both sides had players endure serious injuries.
When Amy Madden broke in midfield on the hour mark, she was brought down by ex-teammate Michaela Lawrence and both had to receive medical attention.
Madden could resume play but Lawrence was stretchered off after a significant stoppage and also received a second-yellow to reduce her side to ten players.
On 81 minutes, Madden was brought down as she defended the Treaty area and another stoppage followed until the full-back was carried off the field.
Wexford pushed hard after play restarted and some slack Treaty passing resulted in Ellen Molloy sliding in Wexford's third past Mitchell to secure victory for the Slaney-siders at the Markets Field.
