Match Report

Late goals power Wexford win

It was a day for late drama in the WNL as two goals in the last five minutes of this match between Wexford and Treaty United saw the result sway from side to side but Youths ultimately emerged triumphant at Ferrycarrig Park with a 2-1 victory.

It took 67 minutes for the deadlock to be broken when substitute Sinead Taylor made an instant impact off the bench to smash the ball into the back of the net.

Just when it looked as if Wexford were then home and dry Gillian Keenan secured the equaliser to give the determined Limerick side hope, all to have it squashed by a 93rd minute winner from Aoibheann Clancy to make sure Wexford capitalise on Peamount United’s earlier slip up.

With little talking points to take from the first half of action, all that could be observed was the away side’s utter conviction and will to get a share of the points in this fixture.

Playing five at the back and with keeper Michaela Mitchell steadfast in goal it could have been perceived at half-time that they were about to do just that, maintaining the 0-0 stalemate and clean sheet until seven minutes past the hour mark.

Upon that strike on the clock Ciara Rossiter squared a dangerous ball into the feet of Taylor who was always going to finish from six yards.

There were then jumps of joy from Treaty when Keenan pulled one back late on, but such elation was obliterated when in the last minute of the game and the third of injury-time Wexford managed to steal the bragging rights through Clancy’s touch.

Given the reigning champions’ miscue today in the Dublin derby at Tolka Park the result means Stephen Quinn's team are not ruled out of the title race as of yet and are now breathing down Peamount’s neck just a point behind them in third place of the WNL.

On the other hand, Treaty while never prevailing in the game today at Ferrycarrig can come away with lots of positives having hung on for so long and nearly clinched a share of the pickings with just minutes remaining.

Sinead Taylor comes on for Lynn Craven as Wexford line up their free kick

  • 53'

Clancy goes low and under the wall off the free kick but Mitchell picks it up with ease

Slight change of conditions may loosen things up as the ground becomes greasier with the rain and is perhaps a keepers nightmare going into these crucial closing exchanges

  • 45'

Proceedings get back underway. No change for either side as of yet

  • Treaty happy to concede the possession and maintain the clean sheet with their 5 at the back bullet proof so far in this one. Wexford always pushing forward but struggling to find the clear cut gaps and chances. Jenna Slattery Aoibheann Clancy some of the standouts in the opening 45.Halftime and 0-0 in Ferrycarrig Park.

  • 45'

    1 minute added time

As halftime looms there's a Ciara Rossiter chance in the box as she skies the ball over the goal from an acute angle six yards out.

  • 30'

Still a stalemate in Ferrycarrig Park on the half hour mark. The Youths are picking away at Treaty's defence but are yet to fully capitalise. Missing the likes of Murphy and Kennedy Aoibheann Clancy and Lynn Marie Grant are really having to step up.

  • 25'

Shot from Kingsley is easily caught by Treaty's keeper Mitchell. The Youths are starting to poke holes in their defence however and if there was more power behind the attempt who's to say what would have happened.

  • 19'

Clancy free kick bends towards the top corner but comes off the woodwork and back out

  • 17'

Rossiter has a pop from a forty yard free kick but it drifts just wide of the goal. Molloy was available for the short option but she didn\'t spot it in time. Still 0-0 but Wexford are dominating the play.

  • 10'

10 minutes gone and we're yet to have a clear cut chance for either side. Wexford with the lions share of possession and Treaty tending to work off the back of the transition from their defence

  • 6'

Wexford on top early on in Ferrycarrig Park. Header from Dwyer at the end of a corner kick is well handled by Treaty as they try to get out on the counter

  • Just under five minutes until kick off at Ferrycarrig Park. Interestingly Stephen Quinn\'s side have club captain Kylie Murphy on the bench along with Edel Kennedy, with no sign of Aisling Frawley either.

  • While we await the team news lets reflect on the key players from both sides. Aoife Cronin's brace last week against Athlone put her on par with Rebecca Horgan as Limerick’s top goal-scorer so far this year and so the pair are definitely attacking threats the home side will be well aware of. Meanwhile Wexford’s tally-women feature names such as captain Kylie Murphy and youngster Ellen Molloy who lie on six and five goals respectively, while goalkeeper Ciamh Gray also makes the highlight list in a different capacity as she has three clean sheets to her name in 2021.

  • 200 fans are permitted to enter Ferrycarrig Park this evening to view the match. No doubt they will add to the atmosphere in this one as The Youths look to build on their win over DLR and Limerick seek to go one better than their draw with Athlone Town last week.

  • Previously when the two battled it out back in series three, Wexford ran away 7-1 winners at Jackman Park as Molloy found the net four times and teammates Ciara Rossiter, Sinead Taylor and Kylie Murphy making up the difference for The Youths, while Aoife Cronin scored the only goal for the home side.

  • Welcome to today's live updates with me Alanna Cunnane and The Final Whistle! After Shelbourne broke the title race open with their late winner against Peamount earlier today, Wexford Youths have the chance to go within one point of the reigning champions at home to Treaty United this evening at 6:30pm.
