Match Report

Peas stay unbeaten thanks to Ruddy winner

Peamount United continued their unbeaten run with a 2-1 win over Athlone Town in Lissywollen tonight.

They were made work for it after Roisin Molloy gave Athlone the lead, but goals from Sadhbh Doyle before half time and a great free kick from Tegan Ruddy in the last 15 minutes ensured victory for Peas.

Athlone had made life hard for Wexford and Shelbourne in Lissywollen this season and 13 minutes in it became evident that they would do the same for Peamount. Dana Scheriff found joy on the right hand side and sent a shot at goal, which Niamh Reid Burke parried straight to Roisin Molloy for a tap in. First chance of the game, first goal of the game.

Clear cut chances were uncharacteristically very rare for Peamount in this one and it took until the half hour mark for them to have a shot that looked like it would go in. Roche curled one from the edge of the area and her shot just dipped over the bar, which was very tough luck.

Aine O’Gorman had one like that a minute later when she won the ball from distance and tried her luck. Her effort dipped just over the bar too. Nothing clear cut, but Peamount were showing their quality.

On the brink of half time they got their equaliser, but in rather controversial fashion. The ball was sent into the area and Fiona Owens got up to head it away, but Roche challenged her with a high foot. It was contentious; Roche didn’t make contact and it was her knee that got highest.

Nonetheless, the ball fell to Sadhbh Doyle who slotted away to make it 1-1. It did however cause fury from the home support and manager Tommy Hewitt was clearly very unhappy.

The second half started very quietly, which is unusual for Peamount. On the hour mark, the ball was headed down to Scheriff from a free and she slid it by Burke, hitting the side net. It proved to be costly.

In the 71st minute Aine O’Gorman got the ball and drove forward, getting off an effort that smacked the bar. It was a quality piece of play, but the luck just wasn’t there.

With over ten minutes to go Peamount demonstrated why you need to take chances against them. A free was won from some distance, with Tegan Ruddy stepping up. Ruddy dipped it over the wall and just inside the post to make it 2-1, sealing the win.
