Match Report
Derry rescue late point in Cup Final taster
A late equaliser from substitute Joe Thomson rescued a point for title-chasing Derry against a stubbornly organised, stout Shelbourne.
Despite salvaging a draw, Derry will feel this is a game they should have won tonight considering the chances they created and squandered.
It was a meeting of the FAI Cup finalists, but the first half was a dour affair. It was lit up only by a stunning long-range effort from Kameron Ledgwidge that Brian Maher reacted instinctively to save.
With Rovers beating St Pat’s, the impetus was on the Candystripes to get three points. Any first half sluggishness was washed out of the system as first Will Patching rammed a shot at Brendan Clarke.
Michael Duffy who was kept generally quiet, then smashed a dangerous shot across goal.
However, the hosts had a mountain to climb when Maher gifted Shelbourne the lead. The goalkeeper’s pass was horribly astray and went straight to Shels striker, Jack Moylan.
Although he had seen incredibly little of the ball up that end, there was no rustiness from the forward as he buried the chance emphatically into the top corner.
Ruaidhri Higgins reacted with substitutions, and this quickly bore fruit. Ryan Graydon first scuffed a close-range shot.
Then, hounding midfielder, Joe Thomson equalised with seven minutes remaining, blasting a fine finish beyond Clarke after Cameron Dummigan’s swirling cross fell for him.
Damien Duff’s side then produced a masterclass in the dark arts, frustrating everyone of a Derry City allegiance with late subs and slow goal kicks.
Yet Thomson was nearly an even greater hero in injury time when he planted a header against the post from Sadou Diallo’s pinpoint ball in.
So even Stevens it ended, and Derry’s winning streak ends at nine. With Rovers winning and the gap at eight points, victory at Sligo Rovers on Monday is a must.
Shelbourne will look to end the season on a high before the Aviva, Cup final, grand finale.
