Match Report

Derry win in UCD

Two second-half goals gave visitors Derry City a convincing 2-0 win against UCD tonight at the UCD Bowl.

A Will Patching free-kick and a tap in from defender Ronan Boyce sealed the win to put Derry six points clear at the top of the League of Ireland table.

The Candystripes were left scratching their heads at half-time as to how they had not found a breakthrough. They rattled the UCD post several times and were denied by some heroics by Lorcan Healy in the UCD goal.

However, the away side remained patient and found their breakthrough after a superb place-kick from midfielder Patching soon after the hour mark.

Patching’s stunning free-kick from 30 yards was a long time coming and the warning signals were there for UCD all game long. Despite a positive start, the Students soon found themselves with their backs to the wall. Just nine minutes in, winger Matty Smith found acres of space in the UCD box but could only muster a tame effort which was hit straight at Healy.

The UCD woodwork was rattled for the first time after 18 minutes after a fine strike from Cameron Dummigan was hit from some distance. The effort encouraged the travelling Derry faithful and the away side went on to dominate the rest of the half, again hitting the bar at the 26th-minute mark.

Derry came out after the break determined to make a breakthrough and just after the hour mark they thought they did just that. Captain Eoin Toal had a fine header find the back of the net only for it to be ruled out for a foul.

The Candystripes did not have to wait long, however. Just three minutes later, midfielder Will Patching lined up for a free kick and placed it beautifully giving Healy no chance in the UCD goal.

UCD winger Liam Kerrigan was kept largely quiet all game but managed to fashion the Student’s best chance with 20 minutes remaining when his effort was dragged just wide. Derry responded moments later to seal the three points when defender Ronan Boyce tapped home at the back post and dashing UCD's hopes of regaining a foothold in the game.

Ultimately, Derry fully deserved their win and will be happy to put such distance between themselves and Shamrock Rovers so early in the season. Their next game is this Friday away to Finn Harps while UCD travel to Sligo Rovers.
