Doyle Spot Kick Earns Bohs Opening Win On Shannonside

Bohemians got off to the ideal start taking all three points in their LOIW clash against Treaty United at the Markets Field.

Like the weather in Limerick, the opening sixty minutes proved to be slightly drab, as both sides lacked the cutting edge required to open up the game.

Bohs comfortably dictated the pace of the game, Fiona Donnelly providing a classy display as she anchored the heart of midfield and kept the Gypsies ticking, yet any definitive chances were few and far between.

New signing Sarah Rowe showcased the physicality that’s required to be a triple-code sportswoman as she lead the line for Bohs and made herself a nuisance for The Shannonsider’s centre-half pairing of Grace McInerny and Allanah Mitchell. At one point she picked up on a defensive error from the two and descended in on goal, her curling shot met by the strong hand of Anne-Marie Ulliac.

Although they often lacked the necessary quality in their passing, Treaty had some dangerous chances. Naoise Griffin bombed down the left wing and put the ball in the box for Kiara Kilbay, but the pass lacked the necessary weight as it was snatched up by Rachael Kelly.

Kilbay was one of four North American starters in the Treaty line-up. Kilbay, Anne-Marie Ulliac, Jacqueline Altrogee, and Claire Winter have all seemed to add a much-needed bit of mettle to a Treaty squad that was sorely lacking, offering that industrious energy that’s drilled into players across the pond.

The breakthrough came in controversial circumstances, a Bohs corner in the sixty-fifth minute that resulted in a scuffle in the box, referee Ian O’Keefe deeming Katie Lawlee handled the ball during what was a mad scramble. Up stepped Rachel Doyle who sent Ulliac the wrong way and slotted it home cool as you like.

Bohs were unlucky to be denied a second soon after, Mia Dodd’s shot rattling off the crossbar and looking to be over the line, O’Keefe not biting.

Up next, The Shannonsiders will try build on their improved performances from last season as they make the trip down to Tallaght Stadium to face Shamrock Rover’s freshly launched LOIW squad, who come off a dramatic win against Sligo.

Bohs brace for some Dublin Derby action where they’ll welcome Shelbourne to Dalymount next Saturday. A win against last year’s champions will prove a tough ask but could propel this squad to meeting their ambitions of a top-four finish.

  • Full-time at the Markets Field. Bohs will be happy to take three points considering a lot of their attacking output fell quite blunt. Although Sarah Rowe failed to get on the scoresheet she looked impressive, leading the Gypsies press and really getting in the hair of the opposition. Plenty of positives to take out of that for Alban Hysas Treaty United squad who look to have improved heavily from the horrors of the previous season. Their North American recruits seem to possess bags of energy and it surely won't take them too long to adapt to Irish football. This has been Alex Cunningham, thanks for tuning in.

  • 90'

Two minutes of added time announced.

  • 83'

Treaty are going to have to summon up something special if they're going to try nab a point.

  • 76'

Ruth McDonnell goes so close to chipping Rachael Kelly! Kelly just about clears her lines.

  • 73'

Bohs are set to make their first changes of the match and Treaty line up some additional subs in search of some extra firepower.

  • 68'

Mia Dodd hits the bar! She receives it on a plate five yards out but just gets under the ball too much and hits it off the woodwork. It may have well crossed the line but unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of VAR in the LOI.

  • 65'

This may be a floodgates moment for Bohs as Treaty are now going to be forced to take a more aggressive approach in search of an equaliser, and may be left susceptible to more damage.

  • 60'

Rachel Doyle slots it home cool as you like.

  • 60'

Penalty given! A Bohs corner results in a scuffle in the box and a handball against Lawlee, who receives a yellow.

  • 58'

    Kelly cleared to carry on.

  • 56'

Rachael Kelly down after a Heidi O'Sullivan catches Kelly with her studs. Kelly carded.

  • 54'

The Shannonsiders are off to a great start this half. Playing on the front foot, pressing Bohs with intensity.

  • 53'

Two subs on for Treaty. Katie Lawlee and Haley Walsh replace Cara and Naoise Griffin.

  • 50'

Kiara Kilbay wriggles down the byline and tries to square it across-again just lacking the quality and she misses Cara Griffen.

  • 46'

    The two sides remain unchanged.

  • 46'

    And we're back underway!

  • Half-time here at the Markets Field. Although Bohs have held the most possession, Treaty have held their own and look to be a much-improved outfit compared to last season.

  • 45'

One minute of added time to be played.

  • 42'

Despite a few scares, Treaty will be more than content with how this first half has gone. Much has been made of their defensive woes last season but they haven't afforded Bohs any clear-cut chances bar one.

  • 38'

Rowe hits the crossbar! It looked to be more of a cross than a purposeful shot, as she hits the ball from the right side of the box as it veers towards the goal and cracks the top of the bar.

  • 31'

Treaty go close! Naoise Griffin bombs down the left wing and tries to put in a ball for the incoming Kiara Kilbay, but it just lacks enough pace and Rachel Kelly collects the ball first.

  • 29'

Play paused for a quick water break.

  • 25'

Big chance for Sarah Rowe as she picks up on a defensive error from the Treaty centre-halves. She tries to curl it in the top right corner but Ulliach is there with a solid hand to tip it out for a corner.

  • 23'

Kiara Crosby whips in a free kick that falls short of any Bohs players, but again, the collection from Ulliach is unconvincing, fumbling the ball before eventually getting a solid grip on it the second time around.

  • 18'

Treaty going through a nice spell, but their passing is just short of the quality needed to muster any sights of goal.

  • 14'

Sarah Rowe gets a shot off in the Treaty box, but lacks any venom, Ulliac saving comfortably.

  • 10'

Fiona Donnely doing a great job so far anchoring Bohs midfield and initiating those moves up the pitch. No major chances as of yet.

  • 8'

Treaty keeper Ulliac looking a tad bit cagey as we start the game. She's spilt a couple of crosses where she hasn't been under significant pressure.

  • 5'

All eyes are on Sarah Rowe as she leads the line for The Gypsies. She'll hope to use the physicality she's garnered in the AFLW to bully Treaty's centre-backs.

  • 2'

Bohs have taken initiative from the gun, pushing the intensity and utilising their width, really stretching the game.

  • 1'

The hosts get it kicked off.

  • Looks to be a fairly drab, cloudy evening in Limerick but no adverse conditions that will have an impact on the match.

  • Last season, Bohs took all nine points from the team's three meetings, recording an aggregate scoreline of 14-1 in the process.

  • Bohemians Erica Burke: "A win (against Treaty) will be huge for our confidence...We've got high ambitions for this season. We're aiming for top four and hopefully a good run in the cup."

  • The Gypsies have lost Abbie Brophy, their most prolific goal scorer last season to Wexford. Sarah Rowe and Aoife Robinson will both look to plug that gap as Alban Hysa tries to steady a Treaty United defence that wasn't exactly airtight last season, conceding 110 goals...

  • For Sean Byrne's Bohs side, the headline inclusion in the Starting XI is that of Sarah Rowe. The three-code sportswoman has postponed her duties in the GAA and the AFLW to return back to the LOI, where she will make a last-ditch attempt to break into Vera Pauw's World Cup Panel.

  • In terms of line-ups, Treaty is offering a lot of North American flair across their side with Canadians Anne-Marie Ulliac, Jacqueline Altrogee, and Kiara Kilbey all starting along with US midfielder Claire Winter. Three more Canadians are on the bench in the form of Ciara Mccormack, Cooper Lee-Lane and Hailey Walsh.

  • Good afternoon and you're very welcome to this WLOI match report. Treaty United welcome Bohemians to the Market Fields where both sides will look to lay some good groundwork for the following season. Home side Treaty United will attempt to build on what was a disastrous season last year where they only picked up two points from a possible 171. Bohs will look to kick on from a mediocre seventh place finish and challenge for the top spots this campaign.
