Match Report

Late goal sees Treaty trouble Bohs

Anne Shanagher’s 90th minute winner secured Treaty United’s second win of the season as they moved further away from the bottom of the table.

Despite dominating the majority of the contest, Treaty looked to have been denied another victory due to lack of clinical finishing in the final third.

Coming into the game, Treaty were the lowest scorers in the league and missed a hat full of chances to put the match to bed, but their dominance was eventually rewarded with their deserved last gasp winner.

The hosts made the dream start, rewarded with a penalty kick after just 10 minutes when Lauren Keane was fouled in the area by Bronagh Kane.

Centre back Jenna Slattery stepped up and powered the ball into the bottom corner, leaving Bohemian goalkeeper Courtney Maguire rooted to the spot.

The visitors responded well to going a goal behind and went through after Abbie Brophy dispossessed Eve O’Sullivan, but her shot flew wide of the target.

In the second half, Cara Griffin played in Aoife Horgan who fired a shot straight at Maguire, but the keeper spilled the ball, and it seemed that it was passed backed into Maguire’s hands by a Bohemians defender.

Despite loud protests from the Treaty players and staff, the referee waved play on.

The home side continued to push for a second goal, as Slattery’s effort from a free kick was just inches wide and later striker Horgan rounded Maguire but a vital block by Annemarie Byrne kept the scores at 1-0.

Controversy struck once more as Treaty were denied a penalty when Yvonne Hedigan appeared to have fouled Gillian Keenan in the box but once more the referee waved play on.

Treaty looked to be cruising to victory until the 81st minute when Abbie Brophy produced a long-range screamer that flew into the corner of the net, completely against the run of play.

With both sides pushing for a winner rather than settling for a draw, it set up a grandstand finale at Jackman Park.

Maguire saved Aine Walsh’s effort from close-range but the ball fell to substitute Shanagher, who made no mistake in rescuing a much needed three points for the hosts, by placing the ball into an empty net.

Treaty kick us off in their changed strip of all blue.

  • The weather in Limerick is currently a sunny 17 degrees Celsius, with very little chance of rain and a five mph wind.

  • The two sides last met on the opening round of the season with Bohemians thrashing Treaty 6-2, courtesy of braces from Bronagh Kane and Aoife Robinson, added to goals from Naima Chemaou and Sophie Watters.

  • Despite their poor form, Treaty can go level on points with Bohemians with a win and move further away from basement side Cork City.

  • Last week’s win ended a torrid run of six games without a victory, having not previously won since the opening day of the season. Bohemians finished in last place in last year’s campaign and will be hoping to avoid repeating the feat with a strong second half of the season.

  • Sean Byrne’s Bohemians haven’t endured the miserable campaign Treaty have, as they lie in mid-table in fifth place on seven points. They come into the match off the back of a 3-2 victory away to Athlone Town, courtesy of a brace from Erica Burke and Chloe Darby’s winner.

  • Connolly has endured problems at either end of the pitch this season, as his side have the leakiest defence in the league and are also the lowest scoring side. They have conceded a staggering 35 goals in just eight games, conceding an average of 4.5 goals per match.

  • Niall Connolly’s side lie in eight place on four points, just one point above bottom side Cork City. Last time out, Treaty fell to a league high sixth defeat of the campaign, as they were thrashed 5-0 at home to DLR Waves.
