Bray impress in home win over Athlone
Bray Wanderers got their first win in 11 games with a 3-0 win over Athlone Town at the Carlisle Grounds tonight.
A brace from Darragh Lynch with one either side of half time followed by a goal from his replacement Rob Manley ensured the Seagulls left the home crowd feeling satisfied.
Bray did start somewhat strong. In the 10th minute, Callum Thompson skinned an Athlone defender on the right and crossed into Ben Feeney, who could not keep his header down. A warning sign Athlone did not heed.
Nine minutes later we had the breakthrough. Bray worked a corner routine well, playing it short and putting together a series of short passes around the perimeter of the box. Feeney eventually moved it to Darragh Lynch who slammed it in at the near post, with Mark Smith not really having a chance.
The game was a quiet one for large spells and it wasn’t until the 40th minute that another chance happened. Glen McAuley swung in a corner for Athlone and one of the Bray defenders got a touch that sent it creeping across the face of his own goal.
No one else managed a touch and the ball rolled on, leaving Athlone with a chance against the run of play that was not taken.
In the 53rd minute, the visitors should have equalised. Thomas Oluwa was played down the left and crossed it into Carlton Ubaezuonu, who just got his touch all wrong. Rather than it being turned in, a goalmouth scramble ensued and Bray would clear their lines.
This came back to bite Athlone. In the 64th minute, the game was sealed. Lynch worked his way into the Athlone box and although it looked like he’d been nudged off the ball, he managed to poke it by Smith in slow motion. An absolute pea roller that Athlone will be left wondering how it went in.
The cherry on top was delivered by Lynch’s replacement Rob Manley nine minutes later. Darragh Livingston followed a cross out right and swung it back in himself, finding his fellow sub Manley all alone to head in a simple chance.
It could’ve been four in the 86th minute when Paul Fox smacked a free just outside the box, but to Smith’s credit he got down well and palmed away.
Nevertheless, Bray will be more than pleased with tonight. Athlone however are still searching for that first win.
