Frustrating loss for Bray
Bray Wanderers endured a frustrating loss tonight at home to Athlone Town in the SSE Airtricity First Division.
The Seagulls never truly got at the Athlone defence and paid for it. The only goal in this one came courtesy of a Scott Delaney header less than five minutes into the second half, which proved to be decisive.
It was the goal-scorer who provided the first flashpoint of this one. Six minutes in, Kurtis Byrne delivered a corner from the right. Scott Delaney rose highest, but his header met the post and came back out. This was an early warning for Bray, one that they did not take heed of.
Two minutes after the Delaney chance, a nice passing move from Bray found its’ way to Brandon Kavanagh. Kavanagh decided to test Michéal Schlingermann from range. Whilst he got power on his effort, it went straight at Schlingermann, who caught it with ease.
Schlingermann would truly show his worth in the 17th minute. Richie O’Farrell attempted one from distance and a deflection clearly had the Athlone keeper wrong-footed. He managed to change his course though, leaping back across the goal and tipping the effort wide, keeping this one tied until the half.
Bray paid for their lacklustre attacking play in the 49th minute. Athlone won a corner and Kurtis Byrne whipped it in. Delaney rose highest and this time didn’t miss. While it was a great header from Delaney, Gary Cronin will be upset at the fact he went unmarked.
For the rest of the evening, Paul Doolin set up his side to take care of the lead and that they did. Bray, like for the entire first half, were mainly forced into taking long range shots, which never threatened Schlingermann. The best chance seemed to come fifteen minutes from time when substitute Gary Shaw won a free right on the edge of the Athlone area. Brandon Kavanagh stepped up, but his shot only met the wall. The following corners from here on out were the only chances Bray had and they never took advantage of it.
For Bray, it’s slightly worrying. A seven game winning streak has been met abruptly by two losses, which they will have to put behind them as quickly as possible. Tonight’s result leaves Athlone five points off their playoff spot and also marks a good start for the new managerial regime, as Paul Doolin now has two wins from his first three.

Bray with a late chance from a corner. Just couldn't get under it though.
Five minutes added time.
Five minutes left for Bray to salvage something. Substitutions have been made, but nothing has worked. Just doesn't seem to be their night.
Kurtis Byrne fizzes a ball across the six yard area. McAuley should've won the game there.
Kavanagh hits the wall.
Good chance for Bray as Shaw wins a free right on the edge of the area.
Bray with good chances from successive corners. Failed to capitalise though.

Bray get us underway for the second half.
Half time as there's no injury time. All to play for in second half.
Sobowale now with a long ranger. Just didn't dip in time.
Five minutes from half time. Even enough battle but neither side has had a clear cut chance.
McAuley with a speculative effort. Shot lacked conviction and dragged wide.
Long ball to Kavanagh but he couldn't take it down. Schlingermann collects it calmly.
Barnett broke down the left and put a nice cross in. No one managed to get on the end of it though. Bray have played better these last few minutes.
Great save from Schlingermann. Richie O'Farrell's long ranger takes a deflection and wrong-foots the Athlone keeper, but he recovers and tips it wide.
Good move from Athlone which ends with a long range effort. Went over the Bray goal, however.
Good move from Bray which ends in Brandon Kavanagh testing Michéal Schlingermann from range. Athlone keeper was behind it all the way.

Glen McAuley sticks the ball in the net, but the flag is up.
Athlone get us underway.
Kickoff is imminent.
Athlone team is now in.
Brian Maher starts in goals for the hosts, just days after starting for Ireland U21's against Luxembourg in a 1-1 draw.
Bray team is now in.
Both teams are coming off losses last week and both conceded twice in the opening ten minutes. Avoiding a slow start could be the key to today's result.
