Shels dig deep to win at Cobh

Ryan Brennan's header completed a come from behind win for Shelbourne in an enthralling encounter with Cobh Ramblers in St. Colman's Park.

Second-half goals from John Ross Wilson and Brennan undone Conor Drinan's 16th minute opener for the home side, as Shels held out until the final whistle.

This was truly a battle, and Shelbourne needed to find the extra gears, to get over the line.

A double-save by Shels keeper Brendan Clarke, firstly to deny a Charlie Lyons penalty, and then, an Ian Turner rebound will be the noted turning point of the game.

Cobh Ramblers delivered a measured and disciplined performance in the first half, they controlled possession and asked all the questions.

Chris O'Reilly was another notable performer for the Rams.

An Ian Turner run down the left-wing created the space and delivered an inviting ball for Drinan to fire home.

Cobh fully deserved their lead, they were rewarded further for their confident play, when the referee pointed to the spot, after a handball in the 35th minute.

Despite missing the penalty, Lyons was excellent in general play, while Lee Devitt pushed forward with purpose.

Cobh were full value for their lead and held it through the interval.

The Dubliners played with intensity in the second half.

Glenn McAuley, Brennan, and George Poynton all forced Cobh's Sean Barron into a catalogue of instinctive saves.

The pressure continued to build and finally Wilson, who was introduced in the second half, drilled low, through a body of players and into the Ramblers net on the 63rd minute.

Cobh continued to fight, but Shelbourne’s dominance grew further. Luke Byrne had a shot cleared off the line, after hitting the post.

Brennan struck for the winner, jumping highest to connect with a cross to steer the ball past Barron, with nine minutes remaining.

It was enough to send his unbeaten side, two points clear, at the top of the table.

For Cobh Ramblers, it's once again a case of, what if. A spirited performance left unfulfilled.
