LOI: Stalemate between Treaty and Longford in Limerick
For the second time this season, Treaty United and Longford Town played out a stalemate.
The sides struggled to create clear cut openings during this contest and the result cements Longford’s place in fourth, with Treaty satisfied with fifth.
Marc Ludden went closest for hosts while Matthew O’Brien almost opened the scoring for Longford.
This game, coming off the back of two tense contests last Friday, did little for the small band of paying spectators, with Treaty failing to attract the numbers they’d wished for earlier in the season.
These sides drew 0-0 in Longford last month and once again they cancelled each other out. There were opening half chances for Matthew O’Brien for Longford, but ex-Town keeper Jack Brady thwarted him with a find one handed save from close range.
Gary Cronin’s Longford will be happy with the result, but they were chasing three consecutive wins following their win over Athlone on Friday.
Treaty went close through Joe Gorman, another ex-Longford man, but his header was never likely to beat Luke Dennison.
Shane Elworthy hit the crossbar within seconds of the restart, the fullback cutting through the defensive cover but hit his shot too high and the crossbar saved Treaty.
The lack of attacking quality was not helped by Treaty’s lack of attacking trio Stephen Christopher, Enda Curran and Joel Coustrain. The latter was only able to play 15 minutes and he almost made an immediate impact, sending an effort narrowly wide from just outside the area.
The chances came in the closing stages with Joe Doyle wasting an effort before Luke Dennisson denied Treaty captain Marc Ludden with his only notable save of the evening.
The sides remain seven points apart with Longford looking in a strong position to finish fourth. Treaty will be hopeful of fending off Wexford and Bray but they’ll need more attacking quality to do so.

Joel Coustrain has been busy since he was introduced but still no sign of an opening goal.
Coustrain into the action and he immediatly sends an effort whistling wide from just outside the area.
Good work from George and Keane with the latter drilling a low cross which Devitt is unable to connect with. Longford counter and are unable to get in a quality cross as Brady gathers easily.
Little to report here other than that Longford are the better side. But Jack Brady has had little to do so far.
Good work from Matt Keane and Conor Melody gets on the end of the cross. He heads well over, however.
Shane Elworthy hits the bar. He weaves his way through the defence, before hitting left-footed off the centre of the crossbar, and the ball flies away to safety.
Very stop start close to the half here. A number of injuries.
Charlie Fleming is cautioned for re-entering the pitch without the referee's signal.
Sean Guerins with a headed effort that looked good but failed to worry Luke Dennison.
Matthew O'Brienw with two bites at the cherry, his first effort is blocked before his second, from near the penalty spot is sent flyng over.
A great save by Jack Brady. Matthew O'Brien, takes it down in the area in hits it goalwards only for Brady to get a right hand to it and push it wide.
Credit to the dozen or so Longford Town fans who made the trip here this evening.
Conor Melody with a wayward header after good play by the hosts.
Dean George with a wonderful bit of dribbling, which Matthew O'Brien ends with a lazy trip on the striker.
Matthew Dunne trips McNamara who was raiding into the area and he gets a yellow.
Longford Town start the brighter and win the first corner.
Kick off moments away here in Limerick. Longford and Treaty United doing battle, both sides in the play-off picture nearing the halfway point of the season.
