Match Report
Coughlan Quadruple Guides Waterford Past Kerry FC
Waterford wrapped up a wonderful bank holiday weekend with a comfortable win over Kerry in Mounthawk Park on Monday Afternoon.
Ronan Coughlan netted four for the second time this season after Roland Idowu capitalised on a mistake to give the away side the lead. Baggley wrapped it up with number six from a Coughlan assist.
Kerry employed a high line but the Blues took advantage of this, with balls over the top proving lethal. Kevin Williams and Leo Gaxha also picked up their 5th bookings of the season and both miss the home tie with Longford as a result.
As mentioned Kerry host Athlone on Friday night before the mid season break with Waterford hosting Cobh Ramblers at the RSC.
Kerry started the brighter of the two sides early on but as expected started to drop back as the half wore on. It was Leo Gaxha who had the first effort on target of the game, with his lobbying effort not catching Paul Martin out.
Coughlan began to grow into the game for the Blues and was having joy against the Kerry defenders. He had an effort which just drifted past the post, the first sign of danger.
Conn-Clarke and Baggley both had efforts that Aaron O’Sullivan dealt with well. The Kerry keeper high in confidence after picking up the club's first clean sheet in only his fourth start.
The theme of chipped effort saved continued in the games biggest chance on 27 mins when Shane Griffin found himself in one on one but O’Sullivan was equal to his lifted shot with Kevin Williams clearing and rebound.
Just as the praise was coming in for O’Sullivan, Ryan Burke’s long over the top ball was met by O’Sullivan who missed his kick leaving Idowu an empty net to give the Blues the lead. A real sucker punch for Kerry after a strong half an hour.
As the fourth officials board went up to indicate the additional time at the end of the half, Waterford were busy getting their second. Another long ball over the high Kerry line left a two on one with Shane Griffin laying to his left for Ronan Coughlan who smashed home for his 20th of the campaign. Another suckerpunch for the Kingdom, who have made a habit of conceding goals at crucial times in the match.
Seemed like a damage limitation job to begin the second half as this game was out of reach, but things got worse for the Kingdom with captain Kevin Williams picking up a yellow for mouthing at the ref, which is his fifth of the season and suspension Friday will end his streak as the only Kerry player to play every minute. Gaxha, sits second on that list, and also misses Friday with his 5th yellow coming in the first half.
It was three before the hour mark. Ronan Coughlan’s 21st of the season came off a great pass from Conn-Clarke perfectly weighted for Coughlan who smashed off his left near post through O’Sullivan.
Coughlan grabbed his third hattrick of the season on 66 minutes, this time Baggley providing the through ball to the Limerick man who slotted into the right corner to grab his 22nd of the season. Waterford playing some incredible free flowing football with the pressure off here in Tralee.
Waterford ran the bench as they did against Treaty on Friday night and created a few more chances with Oluwa and Larkin having troubling efforts.
Rob Vasiu took down Thomas Oluwa in the box with a rash challenge with just four minutes left on the clock.
Ronan Coughan stepped up and with the Jorginho stutter technique slotted the ball bottom right for his fourth and Waterford’s fifth on the day.
It was six just on the 90th minute mark when Coughlan had some incredible hold up play, with a drag back flick pass to Barry Baggley who slotted home to make it six.
Thirteen scored and none conceded for the Blues in a perfect bank holiday weekend.
