Match Report
Stalemate between Harps and Dundalk
Dundalk clawed back a draw, against another impressive performance for Finn Harps in Ballybofey this evening.
In a game of two halves Harps put the visitors under the cosh and got their just rewards with a fantastic strike from Barry McNamee.
On the restart Dundalk increased the tempo to take it to the hosts and got a goal. It was a historic one, as it was the first for a Norwegian in the League of Ireland, as Ole Erik Midtskogen headed past McGinley.
The Harps keeper kept his side in the contest with a host of fine saves as Dundalk looked to take the three points back to Oriel Park.
In the end they had to settle for a point in what was a display that showed there is promise in this side.
In the early exchanges, both sides had sights on goal however neither tested the keeper. Han Jeong-Woo’s effort blazed over for the Lilywhites, while Finn Harps nearly opened the scoring as Karl O’Sullivan couldn’t latch onto an Adam Foley cross.
The hosts got their just rewards for their endeavours with an excellent goal from Barry McNamee, as the Derry native collected the ball on the edge of the area from an Adam Foley layoff and he struck an excellent effort which went into the top left-hand corner. Finn Harps continued to test the Dundalk rear-guard, as O'Sullivan hit a low effort that just went wide. This was the pick of the chances, as the visitors looked disjointed in their efforts.
Dundalk had a golden chance to equalise as Sean Murray started and ended the attack as he forced a clever save from McGinley following a Michael Duffy cross.
The second half saw the Lilywhites take the game to the home side to try and make some parity of the contest and did so in the early period of the restart. An excellent ball from Michael Duffy from the right was met by Midtskogen and he headed it past McGinley from close range to equalise.
The visitors continued to press for a lead goal and Jurkovskis sent in a great cross to Zahibo who couldn’t direct his header goalward. Duffy forced a fantastic save from McGinley from close range and he was called into action again with his defenders as somehow Dundalk couldn’t get the ball across the line, the ball fell to Greg Sloggett following a knockdown and his goal-bound effort was cleared off the line.
Dundalk have gained 11 points from as many matches so far, and now have the same return of points as in the 2012 season.
The last time they had a worse return from 11 games was in the 1998/99 campaign when they had seven points from 11 games. Dundalk were relegated that season and while that is something is difficult to fathom, European football qualification is something that could be even slipping away from them.

HALF TIME: Barry McNamee's goal is the difference as the home side dominated in periods over a Dundalk side who could only muster two chances of note. If Dundalk is to get back into this game they need a complete shift in terms of intensity and phases of play.
