Derry City book ticket to FAI Cup Final against valiant Treaty
Derry City are in the FAI Cup final after they came out the right side of a keenly contested, semi-final, against Treaty United, which they won 2-1.
The semi-final atmosphere at the Brandywell was piping hot and the home faithful had a positive start to cheer from their side, with the returning Patrick McEleney looking lively.
And it was McEleney who instigated the breakthrough early on. His silky dribbling saw him weave the Treaty defence open and his unselfish pass was hammered into the net by a gleeful Jamie McGonigle.
Further chances came as the Candystripes dominated. On sixteen minutes, the scoreboard reflected this with their second goal.
This was tucked away by Brandon Kavanagh with a composed back-post header but was created by Cameron Dummigan’s pinpoint delivery.
Declan Glass came close to trebling the lead before Treaty settled and had themselves a lifeline on the half hour mark.
Winger William Armshaw, instrumental in their best moves, set Jack Lynch free and Dummigan’s trailing leg clipped him down. Referee, Neil Doyle, didn’t hesitate to point to the spot.
Top scorer Enda Curran buried it emphatically.
It was one-way traffic in the second half as Derry tried to break down a resolute Treaty backline. A Ryan Graydon, mere seconds after coming on, volley, and McEleney rasper the closest they came to beating Jack Brady, a man-mountain in goal.
As time ticked away, Treaty manager, Tommy Barrett, went for broke as he introduced young striker, Fionn Doherty.
Yet it was Armshaw who had the First Division side’s best opportunity of levelling when his speed saw him skedaddle clear but under pressure, narrowly, sky his shot over.
And so, despite their dominance, the Brandywell was relieved to hear the final whistle as they sealed a place in the final, at the Aviva, against either Waterford or Shelbourne. Before then, however, they return to league duties, hosting Shelbourne this Friday.
Treaty play Wexford next but with a playoff position confirmed, can lick their wounds from this defeat.
