Athlone still seeking first win
Athlone Town remain winless this season after falling to a narrow 1-0 home defeat to DLR Waves.
Carla McManus’ first half goal allowed the away side to hang on, despite being second best for the majority of the contest.
Athlone were denied a strong appeal for a penalty, when Muireann Devaney appeared to have been clipped from behind in the box but the referee was adamant that wasn’t the case.
Waves started the better of the two sides and were quickly rewarded with the opening goal as McManus flicked the ball into the net from a corner.
The home side responded well to going a goal down and controlled the majority of the possession and territory in the first half but weren’t able to test Eve Badana in the Waves goal.
Melissa O’Kane had Athlone’s first clear cut chance as her decent effort from a free kick narrowly flew over the crossbar.
Waves had a great opportunity to double their advantage, when Rachel Doyle latched onto a cross and fired the ball at goal but was denied by a great save by keeper Abbiegayle Ronanyne.
McManus then almost had her second goal of the game, after she turned the Athlone defence and fired a shot that cannoned off the post.
Despite enjoying large spells of possession, the home side failed to create enough in the final third and showed just why they are the league’s lowest scorers, with five goals registered all season.
Waves remain in fourth place on 13 points from a maximum 18 after securing their fourth victory of the campaign.
Athlone’s third loss of the season means they remain in eighth place on three points, just one point above bottom club Treaty United.
The two sides are in action next Saturday, with Waves hosting league leaders Peamount United, whilst struggling Athlone are away to Galway.

Last time out, Tommy Hewitt’s side fell to a 6-0 thrashing away to league leaders Peamount United and he will be expecting a reaction from his side tonight.
Athlone are yet to pick up a win, mostly due to their lack of cutting edge in the final third, scoring a league low five goals this season.
