Harps hold out for draw with Pat’s
Finn Harps had a man sent off late on, but still hung on for a late draw with St. Patrick's Athletic tonight - which could be vital in their quest to stay in the Premier Division.
This game started at a hectic pace where both teams started the game aggressively with great desire to earn a victory and ended in a tense battle.
There was plenty of action early on in a first half which saw four goals as Pat’s and Harps chased a victory which could have been crucial in their quest to gain their respective aims in the league table.
Pat’s looked in control of early possession, and played good football in midfield. They created chances for Benson who shot wide. Darragh Burns, who was dangerous on the wing throughout the game, cut in off the left and shot over the crossbar before taking the lead in the 15th minute.
Jamie Lennon played an absolutely superb pass into the right corner for Burns, who pulled it back for the onrushing Billy King to score the opening goal. Finn Harps responded immediately as they won a free-kick the following minute, and Sean Boyd struck it low under the wall to level it.
Finn Harps were encouraged by this and continued to put the home side under pressure. Four minutes after levelling, Harps scored to take the lead in the 20th minute. Barry McNamee floated a brilliant in singer from the right wing and Sean Boyd connected to glance the ball into the net, for his second of the night. In a roller coaster opening half hour, Pat’s were back level on the twenty-third minute. Daire Burns played a one-two with Jamie Lennon as ran beyond the defence into the box and nodded it over the outrushing Mark McGinley to make it 2-2. McGinley picked up a groin strain and came off before half-time as Pat’s placed pressure on the Finn Harps goal.
The second half was scrappy as both teams earned yellow cards and the majestic Chris Forrestor came on for the home side. Sean Boyd had a huge chance in the penalty area as he had a free header which he directed wide.
As time ticked down, challenges increased and Sadiki, who had earned a first yellow for a challenge on St. Pat’s young keeper, gained a second for kicking the ball against Burns after conceding a free-kick. Chris Forrester went very close but the hosts couldn’t find a winner and Harps earned a point which could be vital.
