Second win for Galway
Galway notched their second victory of the WNL season on the board tonight at Markets Field, overpowering Treaty United 2-0.
Emma Starr and Aoife Thompson were on target for them today against a tough Limerick unit to break down, helping Alan Murphy’s unit make good on their 3-1 defeat to Athlone last week.
Many would have backed Galway to take an early lead when a foul by Jesse Mendez saw a penalty awarded to the visitors in the sixth minute, although Micheala Mitchell assured otherwise. Julie Ann Russell struck the ball low and hard into the bottom left corner, but the Treaty keeper gathered it to rescue her team and give them an early confidence boost early on.
Despite their best efforts however it was the Westerners Lynsey McKey though who went on to have the better chances of the first half, the first around half an hour in when she was one on one with Mitchell and skewed the ball wide and the second from a longer distance out easily collected by the Treaty net minder.
The home side tried to threaten with long balls to Olivia Gibson, but the score-line remained 0-0 heading into the break.
Shauna Brennan came on immediately after the pause for The Tribeswomen and made an instant impact, her work paying off in the 63rd minute when a good passage from her tipped Starr into a good position where she headed the ball home into the back of the net. Treaty will have felt hard done by on that occasion, as when the stalemate was broken, they only had ten women on the pitch as Alannah Mitchell was off injured. She was replaced after the fact by Emma Costelloe.
Jesse Mendez had a half chance opportunity for Treaty then in front of goal, but it was Galway to score next yet again when Thompson doubled their lead with a header in the 69th minute.
The away group then retained possession well to close out the remainder of the game and will hope to bring the momentum into their clash versus reigning champions Shelbourne next week, while Treaty head to Sligo in a bid to rack up their first win of the season.

Speaking before the game Jesse Mendez told the Women’s National League Final Whistle.ie podcast that she hopes her team are as “annoying a team to play against” as possible. “We just want to make it as difficult as we can to play against us for everyone” she says. “I’d say from talking to the first three teams we’ve played this year they’re all saying we’re a lot more pressing team.” “It’s always a tough game against Galway, it’s almost nearly a fight really. There’s a bit of a rivalry there so it’ll be a tough game but a good one and hopefully we can get our first few points on the table.”
They did however go unbeaten against the Limerick lineup the entirety of last season. Having met three times, Galway won 4-1, drew 2-2 and clinched a 1-0 victory respectively.
The Westerners are now also without experienced and quality Irish international defender Savannah McCarthy who announced she is ruled out for the foreseeable with an ACL injury.
Similarly Galway were also overpowered last round. There a dogged Athlone Town unit made good on their earlier season performances to put three past Abbiegayle Ronayne in the 3-1 outing, with Gillian Keenan, Kelsey Munroe and Aoife Thompson marching their way onto the scoresheet.
It comes after last week Don O’Riordan’s side were beaten 3-0 by Wexford Youths when a Kylie Murphy brace helped by an Ellen Molloy goal saw them gather all three points.
