Slattery delivers late as Treaty and Galway share spoils
Galway failed to complete the double over Treaty United in the Women’s National League this season as a late comeback from the home side saw the teams share the points at Jackman Park this afternoon.
Lynsey McKey got on the end of a deep cross from Julie Ann Russell to score the first goal of the game in the 49th minute, while the Connacht side’s second strike came from the penalty spot at the foot of the recently returned Meabh De Burca.
United came alive in the dying embers just as they did last week to snatch the victory from the Tribeswomen in the last ten minutes, Gillian Keenan and Jenna Slattery the heroes for the Limerick side as they equalised for the draw.
Keepers Michaela Mitchell and Leah Cohen were the key players in the first half as both safeguarded their nets to see the teams go into the break scoreless.
With it all to play for in the remaining 45 minutes, Galway would have thought they were heading back West with all three point. With four minutes to go they were 2-0 to the good, but Treaty quickly snatched that euphoria from them in abrupt succession.
With 86 minutes gone, Gillian Keenan put away her second goal in as many games, while Jenna Slattery then supplemented to the home side’s tally to equalise in the last minute of the match.
The full time whistle was put on hold however as Cohen suffered a serious injury and was replaced by Maja Zajc who stood between the sticks for the closing minutes and protected the result at 2-2.
The outcome means that Galway now move to 12 points, but remain steadfast at fifth in the table, while Treaty’s share sees them surpass Bohemians and Cork, just three points behind today’s opposition.
Next week will be a strenuous occasion for both of today’s competitors as Galway play hosts to Wexford Youths and Treaty travel to the almighty Peamount United, but if today’s game has taught anyone anything it’s that you can never expect something as a certainty in the WNL.

Two minutes until kick off, the line ups have been announced and the stage is set in Jackman Park! Meabh DeBurca returns to Galway's side, a former senior international she returns after 6 months out. McCarthy captains that team today as Fahy moves to the bench, while Treaty have Olivia Gibson returning after her stint in the green of the Ireland shirt.
Last time out the Connacht ladies put four past Treaty within the space of six minutes at Eamonn Deacy Park back in April, but with Niall Connolly’s team having sured up at the back since then it would seem it is all to play for this time around.
Meanwhile Galway fell at home to fourth place DLR Waves in their most recent fixture, Shauna Fox accidently bumbling the ball into her own net and Katie Malone bagging the other strike of the game to see The Sky Blues leave with the win.
The Limerick side can hold their heads high coming into this one after an impressive and tight showcase against Wexford Youths on Saturday last. Although they ultimately were left squandered by a late injury time goal at the foot of Aoibheann Clancy, their defence withstood the mighty force of The Youths’ attack for 67 minutes, while Gillian Keenan also got herself on the scoresheet.
