Treaty deliver in Athlone
Treaty United made the trip up the Shannon to Athlone and got the job done, getting all three points and thus continuing the push for promotion in their First Division clash tonight.
A first half goal from Ed McCarthy, a wonder goal half way through the second half from Jack Lynch and two in the last ten minutes, one from Sean McSweeney and the other from Marc Ludden more than did the job for the Limerick outfit.
This was one that was even for long spells, but ultimately Treaty ran away with it. They had some good chances in the first half coming from Stephen Christopher, Sean McSweeney and Kieran Hanlon, but it was Ed McCarthy who found the breakthrough for the visitors.
A lofted ball over the top of the Athlone defence found its way to the midfielder, who ran right through on goal and slotted it past Schlingermann, just under ten minutes before the break. It would stay like this until half-time.
Around the start of the second half, the hosts started to apply pressure. Conor Barry and Jack Reynolds both had good efforts saved by Tadhg Ryan to keep it level. A triple sub in the 54th minute only ramped up the pressure and it was one of those subs who might have missed the most decisive chance of the game.
Kurtis Byrne found himself with the ball at his feet and yards out after a Glen McAuley effort had been blocked and came his way. Byrne should’ve hit the target, instead blasting over. This wouldn’t go unpunished.
Treaty almost nearly immediately punished him, when moments later they broke down the right through Joel Coustrain who whipped a wonderful ball into McSweeney. McSweeney attempted a glancing header that only met the bar before bouncing over.
The punishment for wasted chances from Athlone came in the 67th minute, when McSweeney headed down a long ball to Jack Lynch. Lynch chested it, let it sit up and let fly from range, finding the top corner with his half volley. A certain goal of the season contender in the First Division.
It was at this stage Athlone heads dropped and the game started to get away from them. McSweeney got his goal ten minutes from time when Christopher, who could’ve had the effort himself, squared it from the left with a dink. McSweeney took it first time to put any doubt away.
Marc Ludden added another after burying a though ball from Lynch first time into the bottom corner. A good run forward that was well rewarded.
Kurtis Byrne got a consolation for the hosts in injury time. Picked up the ball outside the area and his strike found the bottom corner. A good strike that was too little too late.
Treaty move to second after tonight on goal difference. Despite the dropped points to Cobh, Shelbourne will be hard to catch. Treaty should be a force in the playoffs though.
For Athlone it’s a tough one. A Bray win in Cabinteely means they’re five points off the promotion places. They didn’t play bad but poor decision making in front of goal and in the build up to chances cost them. They saw the difference between themselves and serious challenger tonight.

Full time and what a resounding result for Treaty. They continue the promotion push in exceptional fashion.
Byrne grabs a consolation. Was a good finish.
Another one! Ludden bursts forward from left back and latches onto a through ball from Lynch, finishing sublimely into the bottom corner.
Job done for Treaty! Christopher squares the ball to McSweeney, who makes no mistake and buries it.
Replaced by Stephen Meaney.
Sub for Athlone. David Brookes is off.
Goal! Brilliant strike from Lynch who hits it on the half volley from a good distance after McSweeeny headed it down to him after a long pass forward. Athlone have been cruelly punished for not taking advantage of their pressure spell.
Byrne gets the ball in midfield and drives forward, letting it fly on the half volley. Effort went just wide of the goal. Positive signs for Athlone.
He's very nearly punished after Treaty break and a fine cross from Joel Coustrain finds it's way to McSweeney. Was a nice glancing header, but he only managed to hit the bar.
Kurtis Byrne hits it over from close range after a decent move. Has to hit the target from there.
They are replaced by James Doona, Kurtis Byrne and Jamie Hollywood.
Triple sub for Athlone. Reynolds, Barry and Sobowale are off.
Athlone starting to apply pressure. Carberry about to roll the dice.
Another good chance for Athlone. Daly delivers a cross and finds Reynolds, who had an acrobatic attempt. Ryan pulled off a nice save however.
Two Athlone new boys link up for a chance. Comerford plays a nice ball to Conor Barry, who surges forward and tries one from range. Got decent power on it but didn't really test Ryan.
Good chance for Hanlon, whom the ball fell to in the box after a McSweeney effort was deflected and fell his way. Dylan Hand closed him down however and the ball went behind for a corner that produced nothing.
He's replaced by Joel Coustrain.
Half time sub for the visitors. McCarthy is off, likely due to injury.
All set for the second half. Treaty get us underway.
Half time and Treaty deservedly lead. Athlone may want to get McAuley more involved if they're to find a way back into this.
Good chance for Athlone as Friel plays a great ball into McAuley, who takes it first time but puts it over. Athlone's best chance thus far.
Sobowale booked on his debut. Was a rash tackle on Jack Lynch.
McSweeney nearly doubles Treaty's lead with a header from a free to the back post. Should've tested Schlingermann better.
Goal! Treaty make the breakthrough after a through ball to Ed McCarthy, who finishes calmly.
McSweeney attempts the spectacular as he chests it down and hits it from way out. Strike was tame however and hardly tested Schlingermann.
Jack Lynch played through Hanlon, but Schlingermann was quick off his line to close the angle and put it behind. Resulting corner produces nothing.
Remarkably, he comes back on. Hopefully he can run it off.
Not much else to report. Tempo has slowed down. Daly will unfortunately come off.
Daly is down with a knock.
Switches and long passing an emerging theme here. Both teams looking for and getting some chances off this type of play.
Ball was switched to Daly who cut onto his right and sought the bottom left corner, but Tadhg Ryan was equal to it. Was a great cross field pass from Jack Reynolds.
Early double chance for the visitors. Christopher broke down the left flank and cut inside, but his effort was well saved by Schlingermann. The follow up came to McSweeney, whose effort flashed wide.
Athlone get us underway.
Teams are now out. Visiting support is very vocal.
Only five minutes until kickoff now.
Last weeks hero Glen McAuley keeps his place. Schlingermann returns after a brief injury. Last weeks starting goalkeeper, Kayleum Rice, isn't involved at all, perhaps due to injury. New signing Tommy Holland is the bench's goalkeeper. Also, it's two debuts in the starting XI for Conor Barry and Tunmise Sabowale.
Athlone lineup is now in.
Teams are now warming up with half an hour until kick off. Still awaiting the Athlone team.
For Treaty, Callum McNamara & Charlie Fleming return to the starting XI. It's debuts for Sean Oyibo and Josh Quinlivan, who have made the bench for the first time. Anthony O'Donnell is suspended, while Alan Murphy and Sean Guerins miss out through injury.
Treaty lineup is now in.
